Marriage Licenses in Reno and Lake Tahoe

Getting a marriage license in the Reno, Nevada, area is an easy process. Most wedding chapels will help you with the paperwork so your wedding day is happy rather than a hassle. Marriage licenses issued by any county in Nevada are valid throughout the state.

Domestic Partnership

The Nevada Domestic Partnership Act lets any couple, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, register as domestic partners.

Nevada couples who register as domestic partners are recognized as a unit and extended rights similar to those held by married couples.

Washoe County, Nevada

The Marriage License Bureau for Washoe County serves Reno, Sparks, Incline Village, and the northeast corner of Lake Tahoe. The license application is good for one year. The Marriage License Bureau accepts payment in credit cards as well as cash, money orders, cashier's check, and traveler's check. However, the Incline Village location only accepts credit card payments.

You can complete most of a marriage license application online. After completing the online form, you will be given a file number to bring with you to the Marriage License Bureau to complete the transaction. Both parties must appear at the office to complete the application.

Carson City

Marriage licenses can be obtained from the Carson City Marriage Bureau, which includes Carson City. This area has a city and county government system. You can download a copy of the marriage license application and fill it out before coming to the office. Both parties must be present to obtain the license.

The bureau accepts payment via cash or credit card.

Douglas County

Marriage licenses can be obtained from the Douglas County Clerk, which includes Stateline (South Lake Tahoe), Zephyr Cove, Genoa, Minden, Gardnerville, and the southeast side of Lake Tahoe. Both parties must be present to receive a license. The fee is payable by cash, money order, credit card, or debit card.

El Dorado County, California

Marriage licenses can be obtained from El Dorado County, which oversees the city of South Lake Tahoe and the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe. Both parties must be present to receive the license, and you must make an appointment. If you do not have an appointment, you may have to wait up to two hours for an opening. The fee is payable by cash, money order, or debit card.

Placer County, California

Marriage licenses can be obtained at Placer County. It covers the northwest area of Lake Tahoe, including Alpine Meadows, Carnelian Bay, Homewood, Kings Beach, Olympic Valley, Tahoe City, and Tahoe Vista.

Both parties must be present to receive the license. You can download the application and bring the completed form into the office. Marriage licenses are also available at the Carnelian Bay office by appointment only.
