Yes, there are wineries in Nevada and they make excellent wines. They are no Napa Valley in scope, but you can enjoy locally - produced wine made with grapes grown in Nevada, and help support Nevada businesses at the same time.
Churchill Vineyards was established in 2001 and is located about 60 miles east of Reno / Sparks in Fallon, Nevada. The vineyards are part of an effort to diversify agriculture in Churchill County with crops that conserve scarce water, enhance wildlife habitat, and create a viable addition to the local economy.
Churchill Vineyards partners with numerous private organizations and governmental agencies to conduct research toward establishing grape growing and wine production in the region.
Churchill Vineyards produces wines from both Nevada - grown grapes and those imported from California. A specialty is white wines, with this winery being the only one making Nevada grown, produced, and bottled (estate) white wines. Three of these are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Semillon - Chardonnay. Red wines from Churchill Vineyards include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Sirah.
Churchill Vineyards wines can be purchased from their wine store at 1045 Dodge Lane, Fallon, Nevada 89406. There are numerous other locations around the area where you can purchase Churchill Vineyards wines or enjoy a glass while dining out.
Unique to Churchill Vineyards are distilled spirits. The winery became Nevada's first licensed commercial distillery in 2010.
Products being developed include Nevada Brandy, Nevada Single Malt Whiskey, and vodka.
Pahrump Valley Winery
Pahrump Valley Winery in southern Nevada was established in 1990 and claims to be Nevada's oldest winery. (Tahoe Ridge makes the same claim. I'm not sure who is really the oldest, but I think it makes little difference either way.) Also located with the winery, Symphony's Restaurant offers lunch and dinner with Pahrump Valley wines to accompany your meal.
The restaurant offers special menus on a variety of special days throughout the year (Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, etc.).
A large variety of wines are produced at Pahrump Valley Winery, including many made from grapes grown in southern Nevada. Among these are the award - winning Symphony, Chardonnay, Desert Blush, Pinot Grigio, Syrah, Barbera, Nevada Zinfandel, and many more. Grapes are obtained from several different vineyards around Nevada and California.
Pahrump Valley Winery and Symphony's Restaurant are located about an hour west of Las Vegas on Highway 160, at 3810 Winery Road, Pahrump, Nevada 89048. Wine tasting is free and there are daily tours of the winery. For more information, call (775) 751-7800.
More About Enjoying Wine
Many of us can enjoy a good glass of wine without being wine snobs or even knowing much about it. However, learning a bit more about the fruit of the vine might help you select wines better suited to your dining and drinking pleasure.
