The Grounds of Alexandria
The Grounds of Alexandria is so much more than just a place to eat. Blending a rustic café with an iconic coffee-roasting facility and a sustainable produce garden, The Grounds keeps the crowds lining up for more with top-quality food and locally famous drinks, set in one of Sydney’s most beautiful urban environments. Here are 8 reasons why The Grounds is guaranteed to satisfy.
The On-site Produce and Herb Garden
The Grounds has its own garden and animal farm, which means you can be sure your food is quite literally coming from the paddock straight to your plate. The diverse menu is influenced by seasonal factors and takes advantage of locally sourced ingredients as well as the abundance growing just beyond the doors of the kitchen. You’re free to dine amongst the overflowing fragrant herbs and edible flowers of The Garden and chat with the resident horticulturist who’ll answer all your questions.
The Artisan Bakery
The French-inspired sweets of The Grounds’ artisan bakery are in a league of their own. Still staying true to the philosophy of fresh, organic ingredients, the experienced pastry chefs constantly experiment with and reinvent their signature cakes to create an innovative daily menu for you. Located within The Café, the artisans in the bakery and patisserie delicately craft cakes to eat in or take away.
The Resident Coffee Experts
The Coffee Academy at the Grounds is a research and education facility that allows the coffee experts to trial various roasting methods with imported machinery. The result of the persistent testing with single-sourced coffee beans is flawless coffee that is full of flavour and aroma, has just the right mouth-feel, and just the right amount of acidity. Translation: seriously good coffee!
The Cocktails and Shed Brews
If you’re in need of the perfect happy hour while in Sydney, you needn’t look further than The Potting Shed – where pots hang and macaws perch while you catch up with friends. Also known as ‘the local watering hole’, the Potting Shed offers such appropriately named original cocktails as the basil-infused Toiler’s Tonic. Your favorites are all available in sharing jugs to enjoy alongside sharing plates of the light-but-satisfying nibbles, craft beers on tap and a selection of divine wines.
The Takeaway Goodies
The experience doesn’t have to end when you leave The Grounds. The crisp ingredients are also made into packaged goods that are perfect to take home. Seasonal jam, lightly toasted or gluten-free granola, and packs of coffee are just some of the goodies you can purchase to bring home with you. There’s also a florist on the grounds, where you’re free to browse through all the fresh and wildly colorful flowers you wish. The Coffee Academy also offers classes to share the sought-after expertise, so if the timing is right, you might learn a thing or two.
The Seasonal Markets
Every Saturday and Sunday at The Grounds Storehouse, The Grounds Markets are held with 80 different stallholders offering their own local produce, as well as other goods they’ve baked and created. Once you’ve explored as many arts, crafts and edible goods as you can, you’ll want to do it all over from the beginning. The stallholders also alternate weekly, so there’s always something new to discover.
The Grounds’ diverse range of food, drinks, and scenery, is an experience in itself, even if all you do is sample a coffee and then stretch out to enjoy the sun with a good book or magazine. It expands across one entire acre and is home to seemingly infinite little nooks and crannies where you can spend an afternoon or night. These include the indoor rustic Café, The Potting Shed, and The Garden, which is full to the brim with natural magic. You can find almost any food here, from grilled burgers to healthy salads to jam doughnuts. The only downside is the potential calorie overload you’ll undoubtedly experience!
Located in the inner west suburb of Alexandria, The Grounds is easily accessible by buses and trains. But if you don’t feel like leaving the CBD while you’re in Sydney, you’ll be pleased to know that another petite location of The Grounds is opening up right in the city! Keep your eyes peeled for a third location, which is slated to potentially pop up on the North Shore.
