The Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic is home to the low-key beach town of Cabarete, famed for its surfing, as well as the beachfront hotels of Cofresi, Playa Dorada, and Maimon. A conveniently close international airport provides access to both all-inclusive and room-only type hotels, with many of the pay-one-price resorts located at Maimon.

    As the name suggests, the Sublime Samana resort is located on the quiet Samana peninsula, a hub for eco-tourism on the Dominican Republic's northeast coast. The resort is close to the town of Las Terrenas, but about three hours from the Puerto Plata airport (a $150 shuttle ride).
