Pound Ridge Golf Club is Ranked in Golfweek’s Top 10 for 7th Straight Year
Okay, so New York isn’t necessarily the first destination that comes to mind when we sit down to plan our year in golf. The funny thing is though, the Empire State is home to many of the top ranked golf courses and clubs in the United States, including the Pound Ridge Golf Club which is ranked in Golfweek’s Top 10 for 7th Straight Year. Couple that with the sheer volume of visitors to New York City, annually, and there are tens of thousands of rounds played annually throughout the state.
Are you heading for New York anytime soon? You are? You want to try something really special? Then you can’t do better than get a taste of one of New York’s highest-rated public courses – and Pete Dye’s only New York design – at Pound Ridge Golf Club in Westchester County. Yes, that’s right, Pound Ridge was designed by none other than the inimitable Pete Dye. They just don’t come any better than this. But that’s not all: The layout was rated No. 8 on Golfweek Magazine’s annual list, so once again it’s... in elite company alongside PGA TOUR venues and world famous courses including Bethpage Black, Turning Stone Resort and Leatherstocking at Cooperstown. It all began when Pound Ridge debuted at No. 11 in 2009, a year after opening, and has steadily evolved into a course appreciated by a wide swath of players.
“We are extremely honored by the Golfweek recognition and delighted with the way the course has matured and come into its own over the past decade,” says Ken Wang, owner of Pound Ridge. “Mr. Dye’s unwavering attention to shot values, proper tee box placement, and overall strategy, coupled with our staff’s commitment to conditioning and service has us well-positioned for the future.”
The Golfweek ranking panel is made up of 675 voters from seven countries who apply 10 criteria to rate a golf course, including overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology, and the "Walk in the park test," which rates the sense of the course as worthy of spending four hours on it. The number of courses per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play; and the Golfweek rankings include daily-fee layouts and golf courses accessible via resorts.
The Pound Ridge layout plays a very tough 7,165 yards for a par of 72. I say tough, but the Master has provided five sets of tees thus, if you choose wisely, and play within your game, you’ll score well. The club boasts a practice range, short game area and putting green. The property includes some of the highest points in Westchester County, with a number of the tee boxes offering stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside. Notable holes at Pound Ridge include the par-5, 13th – home to “Pete’s Rock,” a giant boulder that rests in the middle of the fairway – and the par-3 15th – dubbed “Headstone” – which is flanked on the right by a large rock outcropping that protrudes into the elongated, 9,000-square-foot green.
So, you visitors to the Empire State, you gotta do it, because in a region filled with classic layouts, Pound Ridge offers not only a refreshing and modern and testing course design that incorporates Dye’s signature design elements – dramatic mounding, rhythmic routing and subtle deception – it provides the ONLY chance to play a Dye masterpiece in the entire state.
