Popular Swimming Beaches in Japan

Since Japan is surrounded by oceans, there are so many beaches to choose from. Swimming beaches in Japan are called kaisui-yokujo, and most of them are open July to August although the opening period varies depending on location. Seaside rest houses called umi-no-ie are commonly constructed on major kaisui-yokujo during the summer. Below is a list of popular locations.

    Shirarahama Kaisuiyokujo, Wakayama

    It's a white sandy beach located in Nanki Shirahama Onsen (hot springs) resort.

    Access: 5 minutes by taxi or 15 minutes by bus from JR Kinokuni Line Shirahama Station, or 15 ​minutes by bus from Nanki Shirahama Airport to Shirahama Onsen.

    It's a beach on the west coast of Okinawa's Main Island (Okinawa Honto) with an emerald green ocean. It's created in Okinawa Kaiyohaku Koen where the famous Churaumi Aquarium is located.
