Pismo Beach is one of the most popular places to go camping along the California coast and it’s the only place where you can drive a vehicle onto the beach and camp there. You'll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to do that, but if your ride doesn't have that, you can still find plenty of places to pitch your tent or park your RV.

This guide includes campgrounds located in or near Pismo Beach, California. One of them is right on the beach and others are close. To see them all on a map, check this out.

Best Campgrounds Around Pismo Beach

This list is not a complete list of every campground around Pismo Beach and that’s not an oversight. We visited every campground and RV park in and around Pismo Beach when creating this guide to be sure they meet our standards.

With so many places choose from, there’s no reason to stay in a second-rate place, so if it’s not on here, there’s a good reason that might include location, cleanliness or other comfort factors.

Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area

This 3,600-acre off-road camping area encompasses over 5 miles of beach open for vehicle use and 1,500 acres of sand dunes for off-highway motor vehicle recreation. Passenger cars can easily drive on the northern portion of the beach, but four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving to the camping area.

Pismo Coast Village RV Resort

Highly rated by people who stay there, it’s clean and has lots of things to do.

Pismo State Beach North Campground

One of its best features is that it has some grass, but it’s also an all around nice place to stay. Reserve as far ahead as you can at this popular spot.

Pismo State Beach Oceano Campground

82 developed sites with hot showers, a nature center and it’s near a migratory bird habitat.

Plan Ahead for Pismo Beach Camping

California’s state parks reservations process can be confusing and it’s set up in a way that practically forces you to plan months ahead. For the campgrounds listed below that are state parks, find out how to make California state park reservations.

Sites are sometimes available up to 2 days ahead of time, but you’ll need to be flexible to find them. Otherwise, be ready to jump on the phone or website 6 months in advance to do it.

If you don’t have an RV but would like to try camping on the beach in Pismo, you’re in luck. A couple of local companies will not only rent you one, but some will deliver to your camp site:

Luv 2 Camp: Pick your camper and they'll deliver it to your campsite in the area. They even have a handicapped-equipped trailer. They are also the only company approved to deliver and set up at Oceano Dunes SVRA.

Pro RV Sales and Rental: They have 22 to 30 foot RVs and camping trailers for rent and some are pet-friendly. They will deliver for an extra charge.

Get Away RV Rentals: Camping trailers, RVs and Motor homes available. They rent kayaks and ski boats, too.

Sky River RV: They sell RVs and offer a rent-before-you-buy program. Delivery can be arranged, but you can’t take their vehicles onto the beach.
