The Scoop on Piknic Electronik
Piknic Electronik: A Montreal First
Piknic Electronik started in 2003 courtesy of four gentlemen bent on bringing their favorite electronic tunes out of the dark recesses of a pricey, sketchy, even creepy afterhours scene and into the open, fresh, sunshine filled air of an environment that suits not only teens, twenty and thirty somethings, but families as well.
In 2017, Piknic Electronik runs most Sundays and the occasional holiday Monday (like opening weekend and Labour Day) May 21 through September 24, 2017.
Parc Jean-Drapeau's lookout section, crowned by legendary artist Alexander Calder's gigantic L'Homme statue, became the indisputable location of choice and so began Michel Quintal, Nicolas Cournoyer, Louis-David Loyer and Pascal Lefebvre's new Sunday tradition in the park, one that mixes A-list DJs with up-and-comers on the same bill. In 2017, the locale is moved to a different spot in the park called Plaine des Jeux due to construction around the Calder statue.
Spec...ial appearances in 2017 include sets by Tiga (May 22), Jesse Rose (June 18), Chus & Ceballos (July 16), Seth Troxler (August 27), The Black Madonna (September 10), and Josh Wink (September 24).
Past guests include:
- Maya Jane Coles
- Damian Lazarus
- James Holden
- Josh Wink
- Dominik Eulberg
- Claude VonStroke
- Dillon Francis
Who Goes to Piknic?
Families with small children, teens too young for the club scene, college hipsters, sophisticated professionals, strung-out afterhours types... it's rare to see such an eclectic mix of people attending the same event. And getting along. The vibe of Piknic is generally peaceful and accepting. For more information, read my review of the experience and check out this clip of Piknic in action. Here's another.
When is Piknic?
Generally, Piknic Electronik is held almost every Sunday, May through September and sometimes October, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. (cancelled if heavy rain). In 2017, Piknic Electronik runs every Sunday, with the occasional holiday Monday editions May 21 through September 24, 2017.
How Much is Piknic?
Admission $13 before 3 p.m., $17 after 3 p.m, less if purchased online in advance. Free for kids 12 and under. Season passes available on a first come, first-served basis.
Can I Have a Picnic at Piknic?
Yes! Bring a picnic if you want. Food and alcohol are sold on location. Alcohol brought from outside Piknic grounds is strictly prohibited.
Where is Piknic?
Upon exiting the subway station, you would usually walk almost straight ahead (the path is a few paces to the left), following the dirt path, moving in the opposite direction of a giant landmark, the conspicuous Biosphere. But in 2017, head towards the geodesic dome to get to Piknic's new temporary outdoor location. Or just use your ears and follow the direction of the beat.
