Five things to do this August in Philadelphia

You might be tempted to beat the heat this summer by lingering next to your favorite Philly pool, but this August, some of the city's can't-miss events will take place off the chaise lounge. Here are five events you won't want to miss this month.

    Jazz Age on the Delaware

    What: Dressed in their Roaring '20s finest, revelers will swarm the grounds of the historic Glen Foerd mansion during this themed party. An antique car show, live music, lawn games, dance lessons, and for-purchase food and drink are all on the docket.

    When: 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1
    Where: Glen Foerd Mansion, 5001 Grant Ave., Philadelphia, PA (park at Holy Family University, 9801 Frankford Ave.)
    How much: General admission, $45 in advance, $55 on day of event; VIP, $125; Children under 12, free

    What: More or less an oversized block party, this annual festival highlights the restaurants, artists and crafters, and boutiques that contribute to Philly's vibrant Northern Liberties neighborhood.

    Expect seven city blocks' worth of shopping, food, beer gardens, and workshops. Live music will be featured on three stages.

    When: noon–10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2

    The Oval Philadelphia

    What: Taking place at Eakins Oval, the 8-acre public space that punctuates the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, The Oval spans six weeks of free, family-friendly events and activities. Augmented by special, one-off events (movie nights, live performances), the programming spans beer gardens and food trucks to art workshops and parent-child yoga classes.

    When: Wednesdays through Sundays, July 15–Aug. 23

    CoreFit Bike Week

    What: Riding (quite literally) on the enthusiasm surrounding Indego, Philly's first-ever bike share program, CoreFit Bike Week comprises seven full days of group bicycle rides and workouts. Participants can enter to win free classes at CoreFit, as well as enjoy the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow cycling enthusiasts.

    What: The Philly area's favorite 300-acre family farm, Linvilla Orchards, will fete summer's beloved stone fruit with a one-day-long festival on August 8. Dress the kids as their fairytale character of choice, then join in on the fun during the special, family-friendly music performances scheduled to take place all day long. 

    All of the above is in addition to Linvilla's everyday offerings: pick-your-own fruit, freshly made baked goods, and the kid-favorite petting zoo.
