Where is the best restaurant at sea? Despite what my friends, family, and readers think, I haven't dined in every venue on every cruise ship, but the best restaurant I've dined in the past couple of years is Remy on the Disney Dream. The premium specialty restaurant is also found on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship, and I expect it delivers the same amazing food and service.

Remy is a small, elegant French restaurant with seating for 80. It is located on deck 12 of the two largest Disney Cruises' ships. Dinner at this superb dining experience comes at a higher price than some are willing to pay, plus it is often difficult to secure a dinner reservation on many cruises, especially on the Disney Dream, which only has three- and four-night itineraries. However, those who would love to savor a memorable dining experience should try the Petites Assiettes de Remy, a progressive tasting of several of the dishes that are also served at dinner. This tasting is offered in the early evening of embarkation day on each cruise of four or more days, so is available on every sailing of the Disney Fantasy's seven-day cruises and on the four-day cruises of the Disney Dream.

Disney cruise guests who sail on the Disney Fantasy can experience a second exclusive "tasting" opportunity on sea days, Pompidou's Patisseries Dessert Experience. Anyone with a sweet tooth will love this one!

Petites Assiettes de Remy on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream

The Remy chefs consider this Petites Assiettes to be a culinary journey, and it really is, since each of the six different dishes is served in a different section of the spectacular restaurant. The dishes are selected from Remy's seasonal menu and are paired with a specially selected glass of wine for each course.

The Remy tasting often starts with blinis, Californian caviar, and Champagne served in Remy's wine room. This dramatic alcove is filled with floor-to-ceiling rows of world-class wines. For the next four courses, the tasting participants move around the main dining room, sampling some of the superb French-inspired dishes and a deliciously-paired wine.

The tasting concludes with an elaborate dessert in the private Chef's Table dining room, which is shown in the photo above. This small dining room is named Chez Gusteau, and its name was inspired by the fictional Paris restaurant in the Disney-Pixar film, "Ratatouille". Those who have seen the movie will know that Remy is the star character in the animated feature.

The six seasonal dishes I savored at the Petites Assiettes de Remy on the Disney Dream were:

  • Syphon Foie Gras
  • Shrimp and Ibero Ham
  • Grilled Salmon
  • Fletan (halibut)
  • Agneau Fermier (lamb)
  • Chocolate Menthe Dessert

I'm not a foie gras fan, but I'd have a hard time deciding which of the other five dishes I enjoyed the most. Each was a generous serving for a tasting, and the wines matched perfectly.

If you miss out on the Petites Assiettes de Remy, go for dinner (if you can get a reservation). It's a remarkable dining experience, and one you will be talking about for years.

This taste of Kobe beef at Remy was served with a thyme jus and accompanied by a turnip and potato gratin. Like the grilled salmon in the previous photo, Chef Armaud Lallement created the dish especially for the Remy Restaurants on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy cruise ships.
