There are only so many museums and monuments one can visit before being burned out on all the American history that Washington, D.C., offers. Partaking in some retail therapy at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, however, makes for a pretty good break or an indoor activity for rainy days. This four-story shopping complex not only has more than 100 clothing, shoes, technology, and sports stores, but also a number of upscale restaurants and a casual food court, too.
The Pentagon City Mall, as its commonly called, is Arlington's biggest enclosed shopping center. It's anchored by two large department stores, Nordstrom and Macy's, but has more than 100 smaller retailers, too. Clothing stores include Armani Exchange, BOSS, Kate Spade New York, and Michael Kors on the high-end side and Forever 21 types for the more budget-conscious. Zales Jewelers, Sunglass Hut, Pandora, and Oakley cover the accessories department while Microsoft and Apple beckon techies. There are also nail salons, hat shops, and makeup boutiques to boot.
Food options at the Fashion Centre are near-endless, from Auntie Annie's Pretzels to the Ritz Carlton's chic Fyve Restaurant Lounge, where you'll find gourmet seafood and an impressive wine list. Honeygrow has a menu full of fresh and colorful fare whereas Matchbox American Kitchen + Spirit is good for upscale burgers and pizzas. The food court works well for a quick bite while store hopping with options ranging from Chipotle and Taco Bell to Panera Bread and Panda Express.
The Pentagon City Mall is located at 1100 South Hayes Street, on the intersection of Army Navy Drive. Stationed near Interstate 395 and the Pentagon City Metro Station, it's convenient both for those who drive and rely on public transport.
Drivers coming from the Downtown area can take I-395 South toward Richmond, then merge onto U.S. 1 South, which leads to the Pentagon City exit. From the George Washington Memorial Parkway, rather, exit toward I-395 North and follow signs for Washington Boulevard, which will lead to South Joyce Street, then Army Navy Drive. The parking garage accommodates more than 4,400 cars.
Those taking the Metro can either take the Blue or Yellow Lines.
The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is a popular stop for tourists visiting Washington, D.C., partly because of its proximity to some of the city's most iconic landmarks. The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, for instance, is a 15-minute walk or 10-minute drive away. The Arlington National Cemetery, the Air Force Memorial, and the DEA Museum and Visitors Center are all also within a 10-minute drive from the mall.
The Fashion Centre is surrounded by even more shopping (Costco, Nordstrom Rack, Cost Plus World Market, and more) as well as several green spaces (Metropolitan Park, Virginia Highlands Park, and Prospect Hill Park) so shoppers can go for a mid-day picnic or at least catch a breath of fresh air between credit card swipes.
