Scottsdale and Phoenix Chefs Share Their Recipes That Celebrate America

If you prepare special dishes and beverages for those patriotic holidays when you'll be entertaining guests, I am happy to report that many of our local Chefs and mixologists are willing to share! 

These recipes are all provided with permission from their owners. We have wonderful and creative Chefs in the Valley of the Sun, and I hope that some of these recipes will enhance your patriotic celebration.

    Watermelon Cake

While this sweet and refreshing fruit dish isn’t available to buy at Luci’s Healthy Marketplace, Owner Lucia Schnitzer shares her secrets on how to make your very own just in time for 4th of July celebrations.

    Watermelon Cake Recipe
    This recipe makes one cake.

    Ingredients:

    - 2 cups vanilla yogurt
    - 8oz whipped cream or coconut whipped cream
    - 1 large watermelon
    - Blueberries
    - Strawberries
    - Almonds

    Preparation:

    To make the coconut whipped cream

    1. Whip yogurt and whipped cream until the cream is fluffy. Place the bowl of whipped cream in the refrigerator until ready to use.

    To make the toasted almonds or coconut

    2. Place a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat and allow the pan to get hot.
    3. Add the sliced almonds or...MORE shredded coconut and toss in the pan until they are toasted and turn a light brown color. Remove from pan and set aside to cool. (See a separate article on how to toast almonds.)

    To assemble

    4. Remove the top and bottom from the watermelon and remove the rind from the middle section. You should be left with a cake-shaped piece of watermelon. Cut the watermelon "cake" into the number of wedges/slices you want; 6-8 slices depending on the size of the watermelon is recommended. Note: You can leave the watermelon intact without slicing if you plan on traveling with it or do not want to cut it. Slicing a cake ahead of time just makes it much easier to dip the edges into the icing and then into anything else you want to adhere to the icing, such as the almonds or toasted coconut.

    5. Pat the outside of the watermelon dry with paper towels. This is important because it will help the coconut whipped cream adhere better.

    6. Dip the outside edge of each slice into the coconut whipped cream and then into the toasted almonds or coconut, and reassemble the wedges into the cake shape on a serving platter.

    7. Top with more whipped coconut cream and your favorite fresh fruit (pictured are blackberries, strawberries and kiwi). Serve or store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

    It's patriotic. It's fruity. It's a cool and refreshing idea for a hot day in Arizona! This recipe for Uncle Sam's Shandy from Tempe Mission Palms makes a great party cocktail for 4th of July celebrations or any patriotic occasion. It's a red, white and blue take on a traditional shandy, half beer and half lemonade.

    Uncle Sam's Shandy Recipe
    This recipe makes one cocktail.

    Ingredients:

    - 3 Strawberries

    - 5-10 Blueberries

    - 4 Ounces Lemonade

    - 1/2 Ounce Blueberry Schnapps

    - 1 Ounce Vodka

    - 4 Ounces Light Beer

    Preparation:
    1. Muddle 2 strawberries with 1 ounce of lemonade.
    2. Add Blueberry Schnapps, Vodka, and remainder of lemonade with muddled strawberries to shaker filled with ice.
    3. Shake vigorously, and strain over ice in a chilled pint glass
    4. Top with...MORE light beer of your choice.
    5. Garnish with blueberries and additional strawberry.

    The Patriot Cocktail

    On the 4th of July -- or any patriotic American holiday -- this special recipe for The Patriot from the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess will make a refreshing treat for the adults at your gathering.

    The Patriot Cocktail

    Ingredients:
    ½ oz of Malibu Rum
    ¾ oz blue Curacao
    Splash of pineapple juice
    ½ oz Bacardi Coco
    1 oz of Pina Colada mix
    ½ oz of Bacardi Superior
    1 oz Strawberry Daiquiri Mix

    Preparation:
    1. Blend Malibu Rum, blue Curacao and pineapple juice.
    2. In a separate blender, blend Bacardi Coco, Pina Colada mix.
    3. In a separate blender, blend Bacardi Superior, Strawberry Daiquiri Mix.
    4. Build in glass: pour the strawberry mix first, then the Pina colada mix and top it off with the blue mixture.

    Red, White and Blueberry Margarita

    The farmer's market assortment of seasonal berries makes the Red, White and Blueberry Margarita a perfect patriotic refresher. This recipe was provided courtesy of SOL Mexican Cocina at Scottsdale Quarter.

    Red, White and Blueberry Margarita

    Ingredients:

    • 2.75oz Blanco (white) tequila
    • 1 oz fresh lime juice
    • 1 oz simple syrup
    • .75 oz club soda
    • 6 blueberries
    • 6 raspberries

    Preparation:
    1. Muddle blueberries and raspberries.
    2. Shake muddled berries with Blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and club soda.
    3. Pour over ice in a margarita or highball glass.

    Sparkling Sangria​ Cocktail Recipe
    This recipe makes one cocktail.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 oz. of Elderflower Liqueur
    • Lemon Slice
    • ​Orange Slice
    • Grapefruit Slice
    • Purple Basil Leaf
    • Sparkling Wine (as needed) 

    Preparation:

    1. In a shaker glass, add liqueur along with fruits and basil and ice and shake.

    2. Pour it into a glass and top with sparkling wine.
