Orange Sky has a dramatic, modern dining room with clean, modern lines and comfortable seating with large tables and floor to ceiling glass to afford spectacular views. There is a lobby lounge with music and an outside patio with mountain views and an infinity pool.
Self-parking is available. You'll have to walk through the [somewhat smoky] casino to get to the Orange Sky elevators. I don't recommend Orange Sky for children, but, of course, they will be accommodated.
After dinner you might want to stop at Degree 270 on the 14th floor for more views, live entertainment, dancing and drink specials. There was a private party on the night I visited, so I can't comment on it.
Orange Sky - The Damages
One salad, one antipasto to share, two entrees, one seafood addition to an entree, two side dishes and a dessert designed for two, excluding beverages, tax and tip, comes to $148, or $74 per person.
Orange Sky is recognized by Wine Spectator as having one of the best wine lists in Arizona. A nice selection of wines by the glass is offered, with prices from about $10 to $20 per glass. The complete wine list, with prices, is available online.
The Experience at Orange Sky at Talking Stick Resort
Just getting to your table at Orange Sky is an experience! Check in at the desk on the main floor of the hotel/casino, where you will see a notice of the dress code at Orange Sky. No hats, shorts, tee shirts, tank tops, baggy clothes or ripped jeans. You will be escorted to the elevator that whisks you to the 15th floor. There is a sizable lounge right outside the restaurant where you can relax before dinner and enjoy a cocktail and live musical entertainment. If your reservations are later in the evening, you might want to arrive here early to enjoy that Orange Sky Sunset!
There is a set of private, curtained enclaves along the west wall of the restaurant where groups of up to four people can witness the sunset in an intimate setting. You must spend a minimum amount to reserve one of these tables. While they are romantic and face that beautiful sunset, be aware that the rest of the western view is not all that appealing.
The dining room is stunning. Not many restaurants in town afford so much space between tables, making it very comfortable to have a private conversation even if you are not at an enclave table. There are tables with northern mountain views (the prettiest), eastern golf course views, western views (great right at sunset, but bright, too!) as well as a community table.
The Roasted Beet Salad ($11) is wonderful, cool and fresh. An Antipasti Plate ($29) with prosciutto, bresaola, sopressata, goat cheese, fig jam, pickled asparagus and olives is fine, but unremarkable compared to various butcher block plates that one can get at various wine bars around town.
The entrees areexcellent. The Snake River Farms Kobe Flat Iron Steak ($40, 8 oz) is tender and very flavorful. The Shrimp and Scallop Steaks ($8 each) are not really steaks at all, but rather consist of a large shrimp and a diver scallop wrapped in jalapeño bacon. These were delicious; the scallops were cooked through without being overdone. You can also order these as a side dish to any other entree if you just can't decide between meat or seafood. Guests may choose one sauce for each entree and may, for an extra charge, have additional sauces. They are served on the side.
Sides are ordered separately here ($8 each) and served to share. The Artichoke Potato au Gratin was flavorful but not gooey with cheese. Less pleasingly, the Snap Peas, Pea Shoots, Pasta & Parmesan was bland and mostly pasta.
The S'Mores Creme Brulee for Two ($12) was similarly disappointing: not really large enough to share and awkward to eat.
The menu does change from time to time, and the prices are not shown on the menu online.
Orange Sky is a restaurant that oozes "special occasion" or "bring out-of-town visitors." Make sure you are either in the lounge or on the patio enjoying a cocktail, or at a table enjoying your dinner during one of our beautiful sunsets, which you can count on for probably more than 300 days of the year. Make sure you have a reservation. If you come to Orange Sky before one of the shows at the Showroom or Ballroom, leave plenty of time, for this is not a place for fast service or fast food. You'll want to take your time.
