Ohio City, located just west of downtown, is one of Cleveland's oldest neighborhoods. Founded in 1818, the area was annexed by Cleveland in 1854.

Today, Ohio City boasts a collection of fun--and tasty--restaurants as well as the West Side Market and dozens of restored 19th-century houses.

Great Lakes Brewing Company, located on Market Avenue in the shadow of the West Side Market, is Ohio's first microbrewery. Established in 1988, the historic six-building complex now includes a brewery, a brew pub, and banquet facilities.

The menu here includes a tasty selection of hearty entrees, appetizers, and grilled items. Appetizer highlights include a sausage sampler with whole grain mustard, porter tempura-battered Lake Erie walleye bites with fresh tartar sauce, and a delicious Stilton cheddar cheese soup. Entrees include juicy burgers, bratwurst and pierogis, and pretzel Amish chicken. Of course, all can be accompanied by the restaurant's house brews.

The Flying Fig, located right across from Great Lakes Brewing Company, combines a warm, inviting atmosphere with innovative, healthy, and tasty food. Chef/owner Karen Small was one of the first in the region to feature locally grown and organic produce, and the restaurant makes most of its stocks, sauces, and delicious desserts. The Fig has a good, affordable bar menu, too.

Walking into Johnny Mango is like walking into a neighborhood cantina, just off the beach in the Caribbean or Mexico. The decor at this Bridge Avenue eatery is casual and colorful; the music is lilting and upbeat, and the aromas escaping the kitchen area are enticing. The menu features a variety of burritos and quesadillas (with your choice of steak, chicken, veggies, chorizo and potatoes, and shrimp, among other options), one dish meals including delicious fried rice with shrimp, chicken, or veggies and accompanied by a fiery kafir lime sauce; and hearty entrees such as Bangkok BBQ chicken and "Tuna Cancuna" -- a blackened Caribbean-style delight.
