The Norwegian Breakaway is a modern mega-cruise ship, carrying over 4,000 passengers from its New York City home port on cruises to Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. The ship was launched in May 2013 and has a bevy of different dining options. Some are complimentary, and others are either priced a la carte or have an additional surcharge. All complimentary dining venues are open seating, but guests can use one of the many interactive screens scattered around the ship to either book a reservation or determine the status of open tables. Guests should secure a reservation using the same system for dinner in venues with an extra surcharge. Since the ship has a New York theme, some of the dining options have a link to this great city.
Let's take a closer look at some of the diverse Norwegian Breakaway dining venues. In addition to the dining options listed below, guests can enjoy casual dining at Spice H2O, a pizza anytime and most anywhere on the ship, or 24/7 room service. Those looking for a gourmet dining/wine pairing experience will want to check out the nine-course Chef's Table dinner.
The Manhattan Room
The Manhattan Room is the Norwegian Breakaway's largest dining venue and is one of three main dining rooms on the ship. (The other two are Savor and Taste.) With its art deco style, it looks much like a New York supper club. However, the great views from its two-story floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the wake of the ship from aft on deck 7 remind guests that they are at sea!
The Manhattan Room has a large dance floor and features live music for listening or dancing. The restaurant also includes cabaret-style entertainment from the "Burn the Floor" dance troupe.
The Manhattan Room is a complimentary restaurant that serves traditional elegant menus with starters, entrees, and desserts.
Savor is the second of the complimentary dining rooms. Much smaller than The Manhattan Room, this dining venue also features traditional cruise cuisine with a contemporary flair, but its menu is different.
Taste is the third complimentary main dining venue on the Norwegian Breakaway. It is located right across from Savor on deck 6 aft in the 678 Ocean Place hub. Since the menu is different in each of these three main dining rooms, guests can easily check them out before deciding where to dine. Like Savor, Taste is much smaller and more intimate than The Manhattan Room.
Every cruise ship has a buffet, and the Norwegian Breakaway has a large one. Complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served from several action stations. The casual restaurant is bright and has good views from its location high up on deck 15. Breakfast includes such favorites as made-to-order omelets and waffles, and there are a carvery and pasta station at lunch and dinner (among many other selections).
O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar & Grill
O'Sheehan's is a complimentary casual sports bar and restaurant centrally located on deck 6. Open 24-hours a day, guests can stop in for their favorite comfort American favorites, and its huge video screen is perfect for watching sports and movies. In addition, like many pubs, O'Sheehan's features games like darts, air hockey, miniature bowling, pool, and interactive arcade games.
Uptown Bar & Grill
Uptown Bar & Grill is found outdoors on deck 16. This complimentary outdoor grill features favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, deli sandwiches, meat balls, beef & pork meat pie, waffle fries, and a selection of desserts. The grill has covered and outdoor seating. Teens will love its location near the Entourage teen lounge, and families will appreciate its closeness to the AquaPark.
Sabrett Hot Dog Carts
New York residents and frequent visitors to the city will recognize the famous blue and yellow umbrella over the hot dog cart. The Norwegian Breakaway has three of these carts on the ship, all serving the same all-beef hot dogs and condiments you see in New York. Since they are complimentary on the ship, they make a great lunch or snack around the pool. This cart is located near Spice H2O, an adults-only area on the ship.
Spiegel Tent / Cirque Dreams & Dinner / Jungle Fantasy
The Cirque Dreams dinner show has been very popular on the Norwegian Epic. So, it's not surprising that the entertainment genre has been continued on the Norwegian Breakaway, this time with Jungle Fantasy. Like other Cirque shows, this one combines theater, artistic athleticism, and imagination, so it should be a treat for guests of all ages. A cover charge (2013 rates of $29.99 for general seating in the banquets and upper deck and $39.99 for premium seating on the ground floor) applies.
There's also a Spiegel Tent Lunch and show for those looking for a daytime dining option in the venue.
Le Bistro is Norwegian Cruise Line's signature French restaurant, and it's a good one. On the Norwegian Breakaway, the restaurant is found on deck 6 mid-ship, with seating sidewalk-style along the atrium and also inside the venue. Classic French fare is served and the restaurant has a cover charge.
Like Le Bistro, Teppanyaki is a signature restaurant of the cruise line. The knife-wielding chefs entertain the guests, and the food is good. The rock garden, bonsai trees, and bamboo plants add to the ambiance. A cover charge applies.
Shanghai's Noodle Bar
This traditional noodle bar features counter seating around an open kitchen and includes wok dishes, dim sum, and noodles on its menu. A la carte pricing applies.
Cagney's Steakhouse Restaurant
Cagney's is Norwegian's traditional steakhouse and looks like one, with its leather seating and wood paneling. The restaurant has an open kitchen, and some seats overlook the dance floor in The Manhattan Room. A coverage charge applies.
La Cucina Italian Restaurant
Some say this is another restaurant that looks like New York since it might be right out of Little Italy. Guests can dine outdoors on The Waterfront, indoors in the main restaurant, or on the interior terrace on deck 8. Family style portions of antipasti, salads, pasta, and pizza are favorites. Many of the flavors of the main courses come straight from Tuscany. Cover charge applies.
Meat lovers flock to this Brazilian churrascaria, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The meal starts with a huge salad bar, but be sure to save room for the variety of grilled and slow-roasted meats carved right at your table by the passadors. A cover charge applies.
Ocean Blue is a new Norwegian Cruise Line venue on the Norwegian Breakaway. This seafood restaurant concept was designed by celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian, who has New York City roots for his culinary skills. Ocean Blue's chefs utilize many of the ingredients and techniques that Zakarian would employ in his land-based establishments. A cover charge applies.
Ocean Blue on The Waterfront
This outdoor takeout restaurant is the a la carte pricing casual seafood restaurant on the Norwegian Breakaway. Like Ocean Blue, the concept and selections were designed by Geoffrey Zakarian.
The Raw Bar
The a la carte Raw Bar is inside Ocean Blue midship on deck 8 and features seafood and wines by the glass.
Carlo's Bake Shop
The roots of Carlo's Bake Shop are in Hoboken, and this shop is a branch of the famous bakery of the "Cake Boss", Buddy Valastro. Guests with a sweet tooth will love the a la carte-priced cookies, cakes, and desserts that are prepared fresh each day. Near the bake shop on The Waterfront is the Dolce Gelato bar, which also has a la carte pricing.
This delightful bar on deck 8 of the Norwegian Breakaway serves a la carte sushi, sashimi, and rolls.
The Haven Restaurant and Lounge
Located on deck 16 in The Haven complex, this restaurant is open only to those guests staying in The Haven accommodations. This private fine dining experience promises unique dishes and wine pairings. The Haven Lounge also features light bites for the guests.
The Studio Lounge
Solo travelers staying in one of the Studio cabins can enjoy snacks or light bites in the Studio Lounge.
