The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a historic claim to fame: It is the first public university in the United States to graduate a class; that occurred in 1798. UNC opened in 1795, with one building -- Old East, the oldest building in the United States built expressly as part of a public university. It took another 93 years for athletics to show up at UNC -- football made its first appearance in 1888.

The Tar Heels football team now plays at Kenan Memorial Stadium, set among Carolina pines at UNC in Chapel Hill. It was built in 1927 and holds 63,000 fans. The University of North Carolina plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the NCAA covering 13 men's and 15 women's sports.

When you go to a Tar Heels game, sing out loud and sing out clear. To do that you need to learn the words to these North Carolina fight songs. And be sure to wear the school's colors, light blue, and white. (The locals call this "Carolina blue.")

'I'm a Tar Heel Born' -- Official Fight Song

I'm a Tar Heel born
I'm a Tar Heel bred
And when I die
I'm a Tar Heel dead.
So it's rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah! Rah! Rah!

Carolina Fight Song

While this song has been replaced as the official Carolina fight song, it is still played by the band at games.

Carolina Carolina fight! for N.C.U.

All hail to colors white and blue
Let's make a touchdown Carolina
Fight! We fight for alma mater
Fight! 'Til day is through
We sing your praises Carolina
Fight! Fight for N.C.U.

'Hark the Sound' -- North Carolina's Alma Mater

This is the University of North Carolina's oldest song, dating from 1897. "I'm a Tar Heel Born" was added to the alma mater in the 1930s.

Hark the sound of Tar Heel voices
Ringing clear and true.
Singing Carolina's praises.
Shouting N-C-U.
Hail to the brightest star of all
Clear its radiance shine
Carolina priceless gem.
Receive all praises thine.

I'm a Tar Heel born
I'm a Tar Heel bred
And when I die
I'm a Tar Heel dead.
So it's rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah, rah, Car'lina-lina
Rah! Rah! Rah!

'Carolina Victory'

There'll be a Carolina victory
When cross the field the foe has fled
Cheer the team to victory
For we are Tar Heels born and bred (Rah! Rah! Rah!)
Glory glory U.N.C.
Our hearts will live with thee
Fight! Fight! Fight the blue and white are
Rolling to victory!

'Here Comes Carolina'

Here comes Car'lina lina
Here comes Car'lina lina
We hail from NCU.

We've got the team to win it,
We've got the spirit in it,
We wear the colors white and blue.

So it's fight, fight, fight for Carolina
As Davie did in days of old;
As we rally 'round the Well,
Cheer that Tar Heel team like hell,
For the glory of NCU.

'Tar Heels on Hand'

Tar Heels on hand,
To steal the thunder from the sky:
Then take our stand,
As every man does right by blue and white,
We'll give the Tar Heels a hand,
And cheer them on to do or die (Yeah!)
All of us are for U.N.C.

and you can betcha we're proud to be
the Tar Heels on hand!
