If you're planning to spend New Year's in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., there are plenty of ways to enjoy the last night of 2018 around Northern Virginia. From First Night events in Alexandria, Fairfax, and Fredericksburg to huge celebrations at local clubs and venues, there are plenty of exciting ways to ring in the new year happening on December 31 and January 1 this year and next.

You and your family can enjoy a number of early evening countdowns and parties throughout the Capital Region. Separate "First Nights" events will take place in cities across Northern Virginia including Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Vienna, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, Warrenton, Winchester, and Williamsburg.

If you're looking for a way for your kids to have a wholesome experience this New Year's Eve, teenagers in Sixth through 12th grades can attend a special event at Grace Covenant Church in Chantilly, Virginia from 8:30 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018, to 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
Featuring a keynote speaker, New Year's countdown, and a midnight trip to Dave & Buster's, this annual event is sure to keep your school-aged kids entertained all night long.

With your kids at the arcade, you can sneak away to the 19th Annual New Year's Eve Gala at the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, Virginia, this year. Starting at 8 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018, the party goes until 2 a.m. on January 1, 2019, and features Fish out of Water, one of the region's top cover bands, performing on the main stage while DJ S-tyles spins in the lounge.
Guests will have access to a full dinner buffet, four drink tickets, and party favors to help celebrate the New Year; advanced tickets are required to attend. Also included in the price of admission, though, guests can enjoy a midnight champagne toast and access to a late-night hoagie station. Cocktail attire is required and a black-tie and suit are highly encouraged.

If you're looking for a way to start your festivities early, you can stop by The Carlyle Club in Alexandria, Virginia, on Saturday, December 29, and Sunday, December 30, 2018, for two all-star performances.
On Saturday night starting at 8 p.m., you can catch Pre New Year's Eve: Big Bad Juju, a special event featuring an eclectic group of musicians playing Motown, rhythm and blues, soul, and classic and modern rock tunes, at the Carlyle Club. The event also features a champagne toast and faux New Year's Eve countdown to complete the evening.
The next night, stop by again for another Pre New Year's Eve event. Featuring Jon Williams, Jamar Dukes, Ade Folarin, Craig T. Dobson, and The PHAZE II Band, A Pre New Years Eve Tribute to the Isley Brothers" features a night of music dedicated to this Capital Region staple band. On Monday, December 31, 2018, starting at 8 p.m., you can celebrate New Year's Eve at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, with The Seldom Scene, The High & Wides, and Ms. Adventure for their annual New Year's Eve concert. Founded in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland, The Seldom Scene is an American bluegrass band that's become a staple of the Capital Region; their annual New Year's Eve concert has become quite popular. Advanced tickets are required to attend and typically sell out before the performance.

The Legwarmers New Year's Eve at The State Theatre
You can spend the last night of 2018 dancing the year away at The State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia, for the annual The Legwarmer's New Year's Eve concert event featuring The Legwarmers, an '80s tribute band. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online in advance; doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 9:30 p.m.

If you're truly looking to escape this year for your New Year's Eve celebration with the family, you can head to the historic Lansdowne Resort and Spa in Leesburg, Virginia, which will be offering special getaway packages for the holidays this year. If you'd rather enjoy a nice meal and have a few drinks in a laid-back atmosphere, Barrel & Bushel in Tysons Corner, Virginia, will be open late on New Year's Eve (until 2 a.m. on New Year's Day) and serving a special three-course dinner until 11 p.m. At midnight, you can share a complimentary champagne toast as you dance the night away to an in-house DJ, and then return again in the morning for a decadent New Year's Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For another decadent affair, you can head out to the Potomac Point Winery in Stafford, Virginia, for their annual New Year's Eve event. This year's theme, "A Royal New Year's Eve," celebrates the parties thrown by British royalty; this year's event will feature traditional English appetizers, light hors-d'oeuvres, desserts, and a selection of wines and beers from around the world accompanied by a modern in-house DJ. Admission to the event includes private access to the winery from 9 p.m. on December 31, 2018, to 1 a.m. on January 1, 2019. Costumes and "creative black tie" attire are encouraged.
