The Breakers is a Palm Beach grande dame with a magnificent spa redesigned by Sylvia Sepielli, whose work includes a long list of international clients. Sleek, modern, and all-white, the new Spa at the Breakers provides a deliberate counterpoint to the lavish 538-room Italian Renaissance-style hotel. "Imagine Armani's beach house. It's clean, contemporary and timeless, in fifty shades of white."
To inspire her $8 million spa makeover of the oceanfront wellness retreat, Sepielli turned to the phrase "held in our hands." The menu explains what that means: "We are committed to the healing and nurturing of our guests, each other and the world in which we live. There is so much to hold with care and respect on the path to well-being, and when you are at the spa, you are held in our hands - with the utmost compassion, reverence, and gratitude."
The Four Inspirations
It's a beautiful sentiment that creates an expectation for guests when they visit the 17-room, indoor/outdoor spa. It also provides a guiding principle for therapists, who are chosen for their expertise, intuition, and ability to extend warm, genuine service. Sepielli's inspirations for the spa are -- ocean, touch, botanicals, and traditions -- because those are words that best reflect The Breakers experience.
The ocean is represented by OSEA, an all-natural marine-based line. Touch is found in all spa treatments. Botanicals, such as essential oils, are found in Tammy Fender, a Palm Beach-based line of holistic skin care, and ERBE, an Italian line based on the recipes of 16th-century Italian herbalists. It also evokes the resort's lavish four-season gardens. Finally, tradition is appropriate in a resort that has been around since 1896, attracting a crowd that returns again and again.
"We do something once, by chance or deliberately, and when it makes us or others happy, we do it again — it becomes a joyful ritual that builds connection and lasting memories, perhaps a reason for celebration. "That is the essence of tradition, and The Spa at The Breakers invites you to create your own with us."
Choose Your Treatment By Product Line
One thing that is unusual is a "carefully curated" menu of spa services organized by product line rather than treatments. Tammy Fender, OSEA and ERBE each have their own page of spa treatments (facials, body treatments, and massage) along with a 4.5-hour Signature Spa Suite Experience!
The limited menu makes it easier to choose a treatment. Besides the Tammy Fender custom massage and ERBE aromatherapy massage, there are just four massages -- custom, Thai, prenatal, and Quartz bed. All the facials and body treatments are "branded" (on the Tammy Fender, OSEA and ERBE pages), as are the nail services (OSEA or Gucci) and the shampoos, blow-drys, and updos, which use Jennifer Anniston's Living Proof products.
Interesting Spa Amenities
One of the nice features in the 20,000-square-foot spa is the three relaxation lounges: one for women, one for men and one for co-ed couples who want to hang together. Outdoors, a co-ed courtyard extends the spa's modern aesthetic, with white marble, large palms and greenery, and a central, soothing water feature.
Other spa amenities include a gorgeous German heated Vichy table for wet treatments, a spa Suite with steam shower, chromatherapy tub and private garden terrace, and a new salon area for nail and hair services. Premium spa retail features local, Italian, and hand-crafted products. Each retail purchase is packaged in a custom FEED bag designed for The Spa at The Breakers. Proceeds from this bag are donated to organizations fighting hunger nationally.
The Breakers was founded in 1896 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Renowned for its gracious service, the iconic resort reinvests a minimum of $25 million each year in capital improvements and revitalization, such as the spa makeover.
The family-owned resort features 36 holes of championship golf, ten Har-Tru tennis courts, a half-mile of private beach, four oceanfront pools, water sports, family and children’s activities, and eight restaurants.
