An artsy, liberal college town, the charming village of New Paltz is part of a string of lovely towns on the west side of the Hudson River, and also a gateway to the famed Catskills mountains. Other nearby towns of note, all of them quite popular with LGBT full-time and weekend residents (mostly from New York City) include the arts center of Woodstock, the bustling small city of Kingston, and historic villages like Rosendale and Saugerties.

It's not surprising, given the area's GLBT friendly attitudes, that there's a good-size (and growing) Gay Pride event held here each year: Hudson Valley Gay Pride takes place on June 5, 2016, but there are several events the week before as well as Big Gay Hudson Gay Pride Preview weekend, which takes place across the river in Poughkeepsie the weekend after.

Events taking place during Hudson Valley Pride Week include several parties and gatherings throughout the months of May and June. The big day of Hudson Valley Gay Pride is Sunday. First there's a Pride Rally at New Paltz Middle School at noon, followed by a Pride March (with this year's grand marshal, Kate Pierson of the B-52s - she's a Hudson Valley resident and owner of the fabulous Kate's Lazy Meadow motel in Woodstock) at 1 pm that takes place along Main Street - it then proceeds west, and then left onto Plattekill Avenue to reach Hasbrouck Park, where the Pride Festival takes place throughout the afternoon and features performances by several artists.

New Paltz Gay Resources

The area's bars as well as gay-friendly restaurants, hotels, and shops will attract plenty of LGBT folks throughout Pride weekend. An outstanding resource for learning more about the gay scene (as well as gay-friendly businesses) in the region is BigGayHudsonValley.com. Also take a look at the visitor site produced by the region's Ulster Country Tourism office for general travel advice.
