The Red Dress Run in the Big Easy

The New Orleans Hash House Harriers describes itself as "a drinking club with a running problem." Their goals are simple, to promote physical fitness among members, to get rid of weekend hangovers, to acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer, and finally to persuade older members that they are not as old as they feel. The Harriers also sponsor the Red Dress Run through the Marigny every summer. It's a huge event with over 4000 runners participating. It's usually in mid-August when it's very hot and humid, so give these people a lot of credit for running this time of year.

The Route

The run usually is through the Marigny and starts at Washington Square Park, located at the corner of Royal Street and Elysian Fields. The festivities start at 9 am, with the actual run starting at noon, going through the Marigny.

It's All for Charity

The Harriers, although arguably an eccentric bunch, are a charitable group. All the money goes to local charities.

The Rules

Because the Red Dress Run is in the residential section of the Marigny, there are rules you have to follow.

  • Participants will be allowed to carry in small (12in x 12in.) soft ice chests which will be subject to search.
  • There will be NO GLASS allowed in or on Park premises at any time. Violators will have numbers and armbands removed and escorted off the premises.
  • Vehicle parking in the Marigny is somewhat limited and, if it's like most events in New Orleans, you should expect meter maids to be out giving tickets. So we suggest and hope that you will consider alternatives to each person taking their own car. Getting groups together to carpool, take a cab, or park in another location and use the street cars or some other public transportation.
  • Along the same idea, we would like to ask that participants please respect the residents of the Marigny, their property, and the neighborhood in general.

You can register early for a discount. It's also not a good idea to wait until the day of the run because this is a popular event and registration is limited.
