Wedding costs getting you down? Can't wait to bare it all on your honeymoon? Love crowds? Then you fit the description of the kind of couple who would have been ideal to participate in the annual World's Largest Nude Wedding.
While many brides-to-be spend countless hours shopping and trying on wedding dresses until they can deliriously say yes to a blingy (or frothy or slinky) white gown, a few were known to have worn nothing at all when they wed.
Grooms at the world's largest nude wedding, which took place in a private resort on the island of Jamaica, showed up and matched them wearing their birthday suit as well (although we can't vouch for the dress or undress of the officiant, the bridesmaids, the ushers or any of the guests).
The world's largest nude wedding previously took place on Valentine's Day at SuperClubs' Hedonism III resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Couples, as guests of the resort, were invited to exchange or renew their vows in the nude with a group of similarly non-attired men and women. Although public nudity is illegal in Jamaica, it was not enforced at private resorts.
An on-site wedding coordinator saw to all the arrangements, which included securing a marriage license, choosing flowers (no boutonnière to pin on him!), and suitable music. Government fees for marriages and vow renewals were additional.
No More Group Nude Weddings
Alas, these nude weddings are no more, especially for groups. Hedonism III closed in 2010. The pool and the hot tub were drained, the mattresses tossed, and the towels and bedding discarded.
Did the novelty of participating in and marrying at the world's largest nude wedding wear off? Did couples think twice about not having a wedding photo album to share with their children and grandchildren? Did brides and grooms admit they kind of liked getting dressed up for what would be, for many, the most special day of their life? It's hard to find the answers. Just know that if you had hoped to wed at this resort in the buff, the opportunity is no more.
Destination Weddings in Jamaica
Perhaps the closing of Hedonism III caused couples to rethink the large nude wedding concept. And all of a sudden, the idea of a destination wedding in Jamaica seemed a lot more appealing. Instead of taking it all off in front of strangers, they could gather with their family and friends (all clothed at all times) at an all-inclusive resort for a couple of days to swim and sun and feast together. And Sandals Resorts, which has several beach-side properties on the island, set up shop to help couples wed on site.
Free Weddings in Jamaica
Depending on the size of the wedding party and the type of enhancements and celebration a couple desires, it's even possible to marry for free at a Sandals Resort or some other all-inclusives on Jamaica. At Sandals, a couple only has to stay overnight for a three-day minimum to be entitled to a free basic wedding.
