Motor racing (cars, motorcycles, off-road, airplanes) may not be the first thing you think of when considering Reno, but these sporting events are alive and well in northern Nevada. Hot August Nights
Hot August Nights is not a racing event per se, but it does fit into the motorsports category around Reno. Many of the classic cars that roll out for Hot August Nights are high-powered muscle cars and some are true racing machines from days gone by. During the event, you can actually compete in drag races and burn-out contests, and check out the restored classic cars at numerous show-n-shine compeititions. There is a demolition derby at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center.
Reno National Championship Air Races and Air Show
The Reno Air Races is a true racing event that happens to be in the sky rather than on the ground. It's the fastest racing event most of us are likely to see, with the top unlimited racing airplanes and jets exceeding 500 miles per hour. The annual event is held in September at Reno Stead Field Airport.
Street Vibrations Fall Rally
Street Vibrations Fall Rally, held in September, is one of the biggest motorcycle events in the country. It's a motorsport event all about Harleys and other big bikes, and the whole scene surrounding these colorful machines and their riders.
Wild West Motorsports Park
Wild West Motorsports Park is just east of Sparks and opened in 2012. This facility hosts an event in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series in August. As the name implies, this track is all about racing in the dirt.
