The 5 Most Off-Beat Workouts in Milwaukee

 Aerial Art Yoga

If you’re like most people, you’re angling in on a New Year’s resolution to stay fit. And in Wisconsin—due to icy sidewalks and streets, not to mention chilly temps— that’s likely going to mean, during the winter months, hanging out in a gym or fitness center. But why opt for a treadmill or stationary bike? Today, gyms in the Milwaukee area offer interesting, unique classes that are not only aimed at getting your heart pumping but are also a blast. Whether you crave a new style of yoga or wish to try out something for the first time (hello, indoor rowing?), here are a few options. Note that all offer drop-in options, so you can test-drive the workout to see if it’s a good—pardon the pun—fit for you. Some are even temporary fixes to outdoor recreation come summer, such as rowing and cycling. But most importantly, these workouts are disguised as fun (hello, hip hop!) but also keep your heart pumping.

1. Barre Burner at Wisconsin Athletic Club’s Downtown location

Forget those images of flighty, graceful ballerinas. Barre workouts are the latest high-impact fitness routine. In this one, which lasts an hour, there’s not only work on the barre but also mat time and the use of free weights. A note of caution: this is designed to be a 7-week session.

When: Friday at 11 a.m.

2. Hot Slow Flow at Milwaukee Power Yoga

Had enough of the hot-yoga trend? This hour-long class, which is suitable for both those new to yoga and those who have memorized a sun salutation, combines chill music with 95-degree temperatures to still get you the same effects as a hot-yoga class. (Read: Strength and stamina).

When: Monday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.

3. Aerial Art at Essential Dance Studio

Having just moved into her new Bay View studio, instructor Charity Harvey is amping up her schedule when it comes to yoga that stretches outside of the box. One example is “Intro for Beginners,” a 90-minute class that schools in the basics of aerial-art yoga. What you’ll walk away with, says Harvey, is “body, strength and grace.”

When: Monday at 7 p.m. (sign-up encouraged as there is a maximum of six students for each class)

4. Spire Ride at Spire Fitness Studio

Packing a lot of muscle movement into a 45-minute class, the claim is that you’ll burn 600 calories thanks to your time on the WaterRower. By targeting 84 percent of your muscles, without weakening your joints too much, you’ll be toned in no time.

When: Friday at 6 a.m., Saturday at 8 a.m., Sunday at 9:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. and 7:05 p.m., and Wednesday at 5:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

5. Introduction to Hip Hop at Danceworks MKE

Think you can't shake it? Why not get some coaching from an expert? In this 75-minute class, which schools in "breaking," "popping," "locking," "krumping," "turfing," and more, you'll be a hit at the clubs (while also toning your bod).

When: Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
