Montreal Sidewalk Sales & Street Fairs: The Best of 2017

In Montreal, a sidewalk sale is also called vente de trottoir (that's French for "sale of the sidewalk") or braderie (that's French for discount market), or even foire commerciale (that's French for commercial fair). You could also just say vente trottoir without the 'de'. Confused yet? Don't be. It's all the same thing.

Sidewalk sales, street sales, bazaars, whatever you call them, they're typically associated with Montreal's more popular summer events, street fairs that start as early as May depending on the year, with Montreal's sidewalk sale season ending by mid-September, sometimes October in less central neighborhoods.

Great shopping deals, cheap eats, live entertainment and activities for kids are often part of the experience, ideal events...MORE for anyone snooping for sales as well as for families looking for something to do that pleases the whole clan. Of course, some are more elaborate than others and may have a unique theme.

So. Which Montreal sidewalk sales are worth the walk-through in 2017?

Full Disclosure: no one paid their way onto this editorial list compiled by Evelyn Reid. TripSavvy.com experts are subject to a strict ethics and full disclosure policy, a cornerstone of the network's credibility.

Every August in Montreal features a quaint street fair on the edge of the Old Port, an 18th Century Public Market organized by Montreal history museum Pointe-à-Callière. But in 2017, said market is being held in the spring, rebranded "Encounters in New France," dubbed a slightly different and bigger affair in honor of the city of Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

Reenacting what is was like to shop, socialize and live in the city's long gone past, actors roam around in character just outside Pointe-à-Callière, the actual birthplace of Montreal. Food and wine kiosks complement the experience.

Catch Encounters of New France is from May 19 to May 22, 2017.

Montreal Sidewalk Sales June 2017: Chinatown

Montreal sidewalk sales to catch in 2017 include Chinatown's June sale.
••• Photo courtesy of the Ville de Montréal

Most of Montreal's Chinatown is pedestrianized year round so a sidewalk sale here doesn't dramatically change the neighborhood vibe. Besides, I don't need a special event to draw me to one of my favorite places in the city, if only to drop by my beloved Harmonie bakery or to pick up sweets made by Johnny Chin. I check out the shops every season anyways. But it's still a fun trek when there's a street fair. Chinatown's June sidewalk sale runs June 21 to June 25, 2017. Just make a beeline for Sun Yat-Sen Square and you're there.

••• Photo courtesy of Mtl en Arts

There's no sidewalk sale in Montreal quite like this one. Running June 28 through July 2, 2017, Mtl en Arts is basically a street sale featuring... art. About a five to ten-minute walk from the Biodome, the Botanical Gardens, the Insectarium and the Planetarium, Promenades Hochelaga-Maisonneuve used to host a sidewalk sale on Ontario extending from Darling to Pie-IX every July. That changed in 2016 and it looks like 2017 will be without an official sidewalk sale again.

But the merchant association proposes ''shows de ruelle,'' French for alley shows. Live music is planned in nearby Ruelle Gaboury Thursday evenings June 29, July 13 and 27 as well as August 10, 19, and 24, 2017.

The mother of all ventes trottoirs in Montreal, the Ste. Afterwards, drop by Place des Festivals to see what outdoor gags the Just for Laughs Festival is pulling on folks walking by. Still hungry? head down to Chinatown for some BUNS.
