Momenta | Bienniale de la Photo, formerly known as Mois de la photo (aka Montreal Photo Month) is a biennial photography event held in September and October every odd year in Montreal. In 2017, Momenta runs September 7 to October 15, 2017. The next one is in 2019.
Featuring guest curator Ami Barak, interested parties peruse dozens of exhibits at this or any given Momenta | Bienniale de la Photo edition, all free of charge.
Organizers also propose a handful of paid events, from meet-the-artist brunches to colloquia to pre-launch parties.
The 2017 edition of Momenta features 150 works from 38 artists from 17 countries exhibited in 13 different venues across Montreal
Mois de la Photo 2017 Theme and Venues
Under the umbrella theme of 'What Does the Image Stand For?', Momenta 2017 will, according to organizers, "probe the concept of photographic evidence in all its guises. The event will feature works that question the status of the photograph as a recording of the real, and will examine the fantastical and sublimated character of reality. Viewers will be encouraged to take a critical stance toward the testimonial value of lens- based images, be they still or moving."
In 2017, 13 venues showcasing 150 works from 38 artists across five continents are involved, with exhibits at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the McCord Museum.
Of note to photography enthusiasts short on time: keep things simple and make a beeline for Mois de la Photo's headquarters where many of the month's exhibits are housed. In 2017, the Mois de la Photo hub is at both the Galerie de l'UQAM (map) and VOX Centre de l'image contemporaine (map), on the eastern edge of the Montreal entertainment district.
