Montreal New Year's Eve 2017-2018 Fireworks: Where, When

At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2018, fireworks herald the coming year for about 15 minutes. As always, it's free to watch. The crowd converges at Jacques-Cartier Pier (map). The closest subway station to get there is Champ-de-Mars Metro. Reaching the area by car is not recommended on New Year's Eve given the crowd size and insufficient parking to accommodate 70,000 revelers.

Montreal New Year's Eve 2018: Anything Happening Before the Fireworks?

On December 31, 2017, expect a local DJ mix to start as of 7 p.m. By 10 p.m., local French music acts usually take to the stage. It's an annual tradition. In 2017-2018, headliners include Daniel Bélanger, Mes Aïeux, Vincent Vallières, and Pierre Kwenders.

Another activity to consider before heading down to the fireworks is catching Mass at the Notre-Dame Basilica.

And to celebrate the end of the 375th anniversary year of the birth of Montreal, head to Marché Bonsecours as of noon on December 31, 2017. Typical sugar shack meal items like pea soup, tourtière, and poudding chômeur are served free of charge until supplies run out. Storytellers and assorted activities are on-site until the fireworks at midnight.

    What About After the Fireworks?

Throughout the evening, the Old Port skating rink on Bonsecours Basin is open for business, complete with skate rentals. The public can even skate on the ice after the fireworks until 2 a.m. on January 1, 2018. Details on admission and skate rental prices here.

Just one thing. If you're going to hit the ice, remember to bundle up because it gets windy at the Old Port. It can feel colder than the actual outdoor temperature listed on weather websites
