    Montreal Jazz Festival 2017: The Fest's Best Free Concerts

    Every year, the Montreal Jazz Festival proposes hundreds of free concerts. HUNDREDS. You could technically spend the entire fest catching dozens of outdoor gigs a day on stages set up in various outdoor squares in Quartier des Spectacles without paying a penny. Just show up and take it in.

    This year? The Montreal Jazz Festival 2017 edition proposes over 300 free shows over its 10-day run. 

    And pay close attention to which Quartier des Spectacles square is associated with each gig. Nearly every plaza or major space in the neighborhood is listed and described right here, complete with map.

    Nice-born, Montreal-based soulful songstress Betty Bonifassi roars contralto, delivering powerful, raw vocals with every tune. Her latest album, Lomax, is "inspired by slave songs from the turn of the 20th century and recordings by Alan Lomax," an ethnomusicologist who spent a lifetime studying American folk song.

    From straight-up jazz to original, dreamy compositions, Vancouver native turned NYC transplant, bassist, composer, and singer-songwriter Brandi Disterheft is no stranger to the scene, having impressed jazz legend Oscar Peterson himself with her contrabassist plucking, a signature rhythmic pulse he claimed reminded him of that of his own bassist, Ray Brown.
