Martin Luther King Day of Service was designated by Congress in 1994 transforming the holiday into a National Day of Service. Serve DC and the Office of the Secretary ask for volunteers to take part in a day that keeps alive the legacy of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers will participate in over 1300 projects that spread throughout Washington DC’s 8 wards. The District of Columbia will celebrate a day of service on Martin Luther King Day.

Service Projects Around the DC Capital Region

Serve DC - As the lead agency, Serve DC matches volunteers to community service projects including city beautification, administrative and manual aid to local non-profits, health fairs, school clean-ups, MLK educational forums, and college preparation fairs. Serve DC partners with District agencies, community-based organizations, schools, and faith based institutions to inside the District and within the Greater Metropolitan DC area to address the needs of local communities. United Planning Organization - Community Impact Day - UPO Petey Greene Community Service Center, 2907 Martin Luther King, Jr, Ave. SE, Washington DC. UPO, DC’s designated Community Action Agency, has been helping low-income residents for more than 50 years. The event focuses on volunteering efforts that will include distributing clothes to the homeless, provide fresh produce, workshops, cooking and healthy living demonstrations and more.
Montgomery County, Maryland - Montgomery County's Volunteer Center is organizing indoor volunteer projects at several locations around the County. Structured service activities will be conducted at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center, Silver Spring Civic Building, Journey's Crossing Church in Germantown, and Seneca Creek Community Church at Gaithersburg. The volunteer projects are all approved for Student Service Learning credits. All sites require online pre-registration to volunteer.

Montgomery Parks - part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission - Volunteer park and stream cleanups and non-native invasive plant removal projects will be taking place at park sites around the county. Volunteer events are planned at parks in Aspen Hill, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Damascus, Silver Spring, Takoma Park and Wheaton, and more.

Volunteer Fairfax - Give Together. Volunteer Fairfax invites families with school-age children to come together to perform service projects. These projects are fun and hands-on activities taking place in Fairfax and McLean, VA. Registration is required, and the site for registration opens on December 17, 2018.
