What is Mighty Mud Mania?

It's a wet, dirty, wonderful event where kids (and adults) can do something that is normally forbidden — play in the mud!

Scottsdale 's Mighty Mud Mania began in 1976 with a couple of hundred kids. It is a highly anticipated event each year, and, naturally, has grown in popularity. The original mud obstacle course is designed for 7 - 12 year olds. The Extreme Mud Obstacle Course is for ages 13 and older and includes seven more challenging obstacles. The Mini Mud Course is for children 4 to 6 years old. The Muddy Tot will provide muddy fun for children ages 1 to 3.

When is it?

Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where is it?

It all happens at Chaparral Park, 5401 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. From the Pima Freeway, Loop 101 exit at Chaparral and drive west toward Hayden Road. The park entrance is on the north side of Chaparral. Here is a map.

How do I get tickets and how much are they?

There is no charge for children (1-17 years old) to participate. Each family is asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the local food bank.

There is a $10 course fee for participants 18 and older at the Extreme Mud Course. The fee supports Scottsdale youth programs. Use barcode 114202 to register online.

What should people wear?

Shirts are required. All participants must wear shoes that lace up and have closed toes. No sandals, Crocs, slip-on water shoes. Leave the expensive athletic shoes at home — they'll never be the same. Assume you will be throwing them away. Your local discount or dollar store may have sneakers that would work. Wear old clothing.

How do the kids clean up?

Don't worry. Children will be washed off.

What else should I know?

Every child is required to have a permission slip and every adult needs to sign a waiver. You can find forms online.

There are non-muddy activities for those who don't want to get dirty, inflatable water slides and inflatable activities.

Everyone age 13 and over, including adults, can take up the challenge at the Extreme Mud Course. Look for it behind the Chaparral Aquatic Center pool. Registration is required for anyone 18 years old and up running the Extreme Mud Course. To register you must have or establish an account with Scottsdale recreation. Registrations will be accepted on premises.

Fast Passes will be available for sale for the Original and Extreme Courses. Each pass has a designated use time and can only be used once. The cost is $10 per pass and is limited to 500 passes. There may be Fast Passes on sale at the event (Chaparral Park Building), but sales will close when the lines get too long.

The Chaparral pool will not be open during Mighty Mud Mania.

There are no prizes or awards for the mud obstacle course races. They are just for fun. There are several heats, with children grouped by age.

Because so many kids attend, children may be limited to going through the obstacle course only once so everyone have an opportunity to experience it.

Drinking water and some areas for shade will be provided. Vendors, information booths about recycling and food concessions will also be at the park.

Finally, be aware that this is a very well-attended event. There will be lines. If participants are patient and courteous, everyone can have a great time.
