Where to Stay in Rio: Mid-Range Hotels Near the Olympics

The year's biggest sporting event, the 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, is less than 100 days away, and travelers are busy buying tickets to the Olympics and making travel arrangements. With so many spectators expected to stay in Rio de Janeiro, it may be hard to find available accommodations near the Olympics, but these six mid-range hotels offer comfort and service near the Olympic venues in Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca.

One neighborhood that will be the center of the action of the Olympic Games is Copacabana. With its famous beach and busy streets, this area has a little bit of everything for visitors. Hotel Vilamar Copacabana is a 4-star hotel with a convenient location--just two blocks from Copacabana Beach and less than a minute from the nearest bus stop.

Rooms here are simple yet comfortable, with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minifridges, and some with whirlpool tubs. Wifi is extra. Room service is available.

The hotel has a restaurant and bar, a rooftop pool, fitness room, and steam room. Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet of breads, pastries, meats, fruits and juices in the restaurant from 6:00-10:00 a.m.

If you're looking for the convenience of Copacabana but prefer something a little quieter, Hotel Golden Tulip Continental is a good choice (it is also recommended by Lonely Planet). This 4-star hotel is located less than 1000 meters from Copacabana Beach in the quiet residential area called Leme. Shopping malls, nightclubs, restaurants, and bars are all within walking distance.

Another choice in Copacabana is the modern Hotel Arena. This hotel combines affordable luxury with excellent sea views and convenient location, just across the street from Copacabana Beach. The nearest metro station is less than 10 minutes away on foot.

All rooms include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minifridges, upgraded rooms have sea views, and suites include a separate living space. The hotel has a rooftop pool, lobby bar, fitness room, and sauna. Guests can enjoy the complimentary breakfast buffet in the casual restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Another option in the trendy Copacabana area is Hotel Astoria Copacabana, located on a quiet street just 300 meters from Copacabana Beach and four minutes from the nearest metro station. 

It features a rooftop pool, poolside bar, and restaurant that serves regional dishes. A variety of rooms are available, from single standard to modern suites. All rooms are bright and tastefully decorated and include free wifi, A/C, cable, and minibars. There is also a fitness center and sauna. A buffet breakfast is served in the pleasant dining area.

This modern 3-star hotel is located in the area of Barra da Tijuca. It's less than 2 kilometers from the Parque Olimpico, where seven arenas for the Olympics will be located. 

Rooms are bright, featuring hardwood floors, A/C, flat-screen TVs, minifridges and desks. All rooms have free wifi. Guests can have dinner at the casual restaurant or a drink at the bar, which is open 24 hours a day. The breakfast buffet is available for an extra charge.
