Michael Franco

Michael Franco is a writing innkeeper (or an innkeeping writer depending on where in his career you meet him). He's worked as a professional writer for nearly 20 years serving such clients as Reader's Digest, Discovery Channel Magazine, American Express, Maxim, Consumer Reports and more. He's also owned and operated a very successful bed and breakfast in Lancaster County, PA's Amish Country. While living in Vieques, PR, he not only managed the eco-chic Hix Island House B&B, he also penned the first guidebook to the island.

Experience

Michael began his career as a copywriter for Reader's Digest magazine where he worked first on sweepstakes promotions and then on music, book and travel product brochures. Tiring of the corporate life, he and his wife Diane (also an RD employee) chucked it all to buy a bed and breakfast in the pastoral Amish countryside in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. When opportunity knocked in the form of a chance to manage an eco-resort in the Caribbean, the inn was promptly sold and the couple headed for warmer climes.

A call from Reader's Digest had the couple shuffle off to Singapore where Diane returned to the company and Michael began a transition into editorial writing, penning articles for publications like Time Out Singapore and Islands Magazine. He soon became Managing Editor of I-S Magazine, Singapore's edgiest lifestyle, travel, fashion and arts magazine. This was followed by a stint working as the editorial director of custom publishing house, Novus Media prior to relocating to Prague where he worked as the Corporate Communications Director of social media event group, Lime&Tonic. He is currently freelance writing, maintains close ties to the bed and breakfast industry and is always looking for the next opportunity to dive back into hospitality.

Education

Michael received a BA in English from Ithaca College followed by a MA in Creative Writing from Manhattanville College. He has attended several innkeeping workshops and belongs to multiple innkeeping organizations.
