Whether you're planning a trip to Miami or permanently relocating to this vibrant Florida city, here is everything you need to know about the types of weather you can expect.

Overview of the Weather in Miami

You can expect plenty of sun in this southern city in the Sunshine State. Hot, humid, and at times, blistering days are not uncommon, but there can also be some relief by nightfall, at times. Due to its geography and semi-tropical climate, Miami has both the warmest ocean and winter air temperatures in the United States (on the mainland), which is why it is a popular tourist destination at all times of the year, and especially during the winter months and early spring, from November through mid- April.

Snowbirds have been known to settle in for the winter when temperatures in places like New York and even Canada are freezing and less than pleasant.

The average temperatures do not fluctuate much throughout the year and, typically, they stay somewhere around 75 to 85 degrees F during the day and can drop as low as the mid-60s at night. This won't happen often, though, so the low 70s are much more typical in the Magic City.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit, you will want to pack a pair of sandals, a bathing suit, sunglasses, sunscreen, and also possibly a hat. Though the temperatures rarely drop below 60 degrees F, it's always a good idea to bring at least one pair of pants or a long dress, and a light jacket or scarf in case it's on the chillier side.

Hurricane Information for Miami

Unfortunately, hurricanes present a major risk to this coastal city. If you are visiting, you can try to avoid encountering a storm by visiting outside of hurricane season.

The season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30, but there have been times when hurricanes do form before or after these dates.

If you live in Miami, the first step to protecting yourself is paying attention to the local weather reports and warnings. It's a good idea to consult a Hurricane Guide in advance of any storms, and if for any reason you are asked to evacuate, do so as soon as possible.
