Mentor, located east of Cleveland in Lake County Ohio, was first settled in 1797 as a part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The lakeside community is known as being the home of President James Garfield, Lawnfield, and for its parks and greenhouses. Today, Mentor is a thriving town of more than 50,000 residents. Mentor was rated #68 in CNN Money's 2007 list of best places in live in the United States.

History of Mentor

Mentor was first surveyed in 1797 as part of the Western Reserve of Connecticut. The temperate climate and less marshy soil (than Cleveland) attracted settlers from the east coast. After the Civil War, the are became known for its nurseries and greenhouses and as a summer retreat for Cleveland's wealthy families.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Mentor has 47,159 residents. A majority (63.6%) are married and white (97.3%). The median age in Mentor is 39 years old and the median household income is $57,230.

Mentor is home to Great Lakes Mall, a collection of 110 stores, anchored by Macy's, Dillards, and Sears. The city also boasts a number of smaller shopping plazas, most located along Route 20. Lake County's lower (6.25%) sales tax makes shopping in Mentor attractive for Cleveland residents.

The Mentor public school system, which received an "excellent" rating for the 2010/2011 school year from the Ohio Department of Education, consists of ten elementary schools, three junior highs, and one high school.



Mentor is also home to the private Lake Catholic High School and Mentor Christian School.

The Mentor Park System maintains more than 20 facilities, including Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina, a skate park, Mentor Beach Park, and Black Brook Golf Course. Other facilities include hiking and biking trails, picnic facilities, a dog park, a ball diamond, several playgrounds, and an outdoor pool.

Famous Residents

Famous Mentor residents include the 20th U.S. president, James Garfield, and former OSU football coach, Jim Tressel, who was born in Mentor.
