The Memphis Zoo is one of the city's most popular attractions and one of the top zoos in the country due to its extensive renovations over the last couple of decades. Situated on 70 acres and boasting more than 3,500 animals, the Memphis Zoo is a great destination for a day trip with the family.
Summer hours run from March 1 through October 15, when the Memphis Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, while winter hours run the rest of the year when the zoo closes an hour earlier at 4 p.m. The zoo is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christ Day, but opens on Christmas night at 5:30 p.m. for SunTrust Zoo Lights.
Admission to the Memphis Zoo in 2018 costs $15 for adults, $14 for seniors over 60, and $10 for children between 2 and 11 years old. For Tennessee residents, the zoo offers free admission on Tuesdays, and special events throughout the year also often include discounted rates. However, if you purchase an annual membership to the zoo, you can visit the Memphis Zoo as often as you like, any day of the week, at no additional cost.
Memphis Zoo Membership Information
Admission to the zoo can be costly, particularly if you are bringing the entire family, but purchasing a family membership to the zoo can help reduce costs if you're planning to visit more than once per year. For a one-time annual fee, you and your family can visit the zoo as often as you like with no additional charge, and you can even attend special zoo functions at discounted rates throughout the year.
Individual memberships (one named adult) are $45, dual (two individuals) memberships are $70, and family memberships (two adults in the same household and all children 21 and under) are $99.
For an additional $20 per membership, you can bring one guest with you for free per visit.
Membership also includes free parking, members-only invitations for new exhibit previews and special events, a 15 percent discount in Zoo gift shops, discounts on birthday parties and special event tickets (like Zoo Lights and Zoo Boo), and three half-price guest general admission coupons.
Purchasing a Memphis Zoo membership also includes a 50 percent discount at more than 150 participating American Zoo Association zoos and aquariums. This could come in handy when taking family vacations.
What Membership Fees Support
Becoming a member of the Memphis Zoo not only helps you save money on multiple trips to see the animals, it also helps the zoo fund its conservation efforts and renovation projects that give the animals a better home.
The Memphis Zoo's latest renovations focused on bringing conservation, research, and education to the zoo's displays and exhibits, and membership fees helped to fund the installations of new interactive features around the park.
Additionally, membership fees help offset the costs of feeding and caring for animals at the zoo and hosting seasonal events like the "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" special event happening March 3 through July 8, 2018. As a member, you also get access to these special exhibits and can even adopt an animal at the zoo.
