Daufuskie Island, SC - Melrose on the Beach
I first visited Melrose on the Beach Daufuskie Island back in 2009, Back then it was known as Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa I think it was. It was a very special place even then. The Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course was, is, one of the best I've ever played; the ocean views are spectacular. Now the resort is undergoing some major renovations. The course is open for play, so grab your sticks, jump on the boat, and have a great day.
Set on one of South Carolina’s “sea islands,” one of several dozen large islands fronting the Atlantic Ocean, between the Santee River north of Charleston and the southern coast of Georgia, Daufuskie Island has an intriguing history. Life on the island has been traced by archeologists as far back as 9,000 years; pottery shards have been found dating back to 7,000 BC. Life on Daufuskie Island has always been comfortably. Wildlife, shellfish, and marine life thrive in the nutrient-rich marshes off nearby Hilton Head Island.
Today, the eight-square-mile Daufuskie Island, and what is now Melrose on the Beach Golf Resort, offers a real back-to- nature experience. The pristine beaches, the overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility, and the almost intoxicating quality of the sea air, make it one those special places where quality of life is a fact rather than a wish.
As previously mentioned, I spent four days on Daufuskie Island in late May, 2009. I stayed at Melrose on the Beach and I have to tell you, it has jumped right into my top five favorite places to visit. It’s the ultimate getaway; a lost world where time slows to a pace that hasn’t been known in the US for at least 100 years. Unbelievably, this Paradise comes with two championship golf courses:
The Melrose Course is a Jack Nicklaus “signature” layout. An 18-hole, 7,081-yard championship golf course of breathtaking beauty. From wetland to oceanfront, the course meanders through some of the island’s most pristine real estate. Rated 74.2 off the Gold tees, with a slope of 138, it’s challenging yet fair. Four sets of tee boxes ensure the enjoyment of golfers of all skill levels. I love this course.
Green fees start at $64 with a high of $85, but that does not include the cart or the round-trip boat ride from Hilton Head. If you’re staying at the Resort, the fee drop significantly depending upon the time and day you want to play.
How to get There:
