Melanie Haiken

Melanie Haiken is an award-winning freelance journalist and editor specializing in travel, the outdoors, health, and the environment. Based north of San Francisco, she has roamed widely across the globe, including stints living in Nepal and India.


Her work has appeared in AFAR, CNN, Condé Nast Traveler, Sierra, Parade, the San Francisco Chronicle, and numerous in-flight and regional magazines. As an editor, she has held top posts at numerous national magazines including San Francisco and Parenting.

She is a winner of several industry awards for health, environment, and investigative reporting, she also helms the adventure travel website Health Conscious Travel.


She holds Master’s degrees in journalism and Asian studies as well as a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.
