Located on the southern Maine coast about a 90-minute drive from Boston, Ogunquit is a bustling oceanside town that has attracted beach lovers and artists for more than a century. The town is famous for its beautiful beach, which is backed by grassy dunes and protected from development, and for its gorgeous 1.25-mile coastal walk called the Marginal Way, which offers wonderful views from every vantage. While touristy in the summer, the town delivers an authentic Maine ambience, complete with a community of fishermen and lobstermen based in Perkin's Cove.
For families looking for a mid-priced place to stay with many amenities and a great location within walking distance of the beach, Meadowmere Resort is a great choice. Located right along Route 1, the Meadowmere is a five-minute walk from the staring point of the Marginal Way and the restaurants and shops on Shore Road. It's a 15-minute walk to Ogunquit Beach. There's a trolley stop where you can catch a ride on the town trolley, which makes stops at key points in town.
On lazy days when you feel like hanging around the hotel, the Meadowmere offers small outdoor and indoor pools, a TV theater with stadium seating that screens a nice variety of children's flicks, a game room with a pool table, and a nicely equipped fitness room. Families will appreciate the laundry room and outdoor grills that are available for guest use. The resort also offers a full-service spa.
Rates start at around $175 a night in low season but can triple in high season. A light continental breakfast is included in the rate and there is no additional resort fee. Be sure to check the resort's web site for special offers.
Best rooms: Rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. Bathrooms can be on the small side, but that's a quibble. There is a variety of room categories, ranging from motel-style rooms with exterior entrances to hotel-style rooms with interior entrances. Families can choose between resort rooms (spacious standard room with two queen beds) and family suites (essentially two connecting hotel rooms). There is free wi-fi throughout the resort and flatscreen TVs with cable in every accommodation.
Best season: Meadowmere Resort is open year-round, with high season falling during the summer. Due to its proximity to Boston, Ogunquit can get very crowded on summer weekends, so midweek visits can be more pleasant. Deal hunters should consider the shoulder months of May and September.
