Mary Anne Evans

An experienced journalist, travel writer, editor and author, Mary Anne Evans was born in London and now divides her time between London and her house in the Auvergne. Mary Anne has always been a Francophile. From that first family trip to a small seaside town in northern France aged five, she has always championed the good things in life that France offers.


A member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, Mary Anne has had articles published in Gourmet magazine, the Observer, Metro and many other international outlets. She has worked for Michelin and Gault Millau, writes and edits guidebooks and the website for Frommer’s, and contributes to on London restaurants and hotels. She has also worked for the BBC World Service. She is currently the expert on all things French for


Mary Anne is a graduate of Bristol University where she gained an Honours BA Degree in History and French. She also has a Masters Degree in Education from London University.

I fell in love with France at the tender age of five over a bowl of steaming hot chocolate and a freshly baked baguette dangerously overloaded with unsalted butter and home-made apricot jam. It was a simple start to a love affair cemented through numerous school exchanges with French students, holidays travelling throughout France, and a summer job as a driver-guide taking American visitors around the Loire Valley, through Provence and into Brittany. By the age of 25, I discovered that I had seen more of France than many of the French themselves.

Then I bought a house in the middle of the Auvergne, about as remote as I could find, and my real lesson on France and the French began.

I use the Auvergne house as a base for exploring this varied country. I hope, like me, that you’ll be continuously surprised and impressed by the beauty of the countryside, the sophistication of its cities and, of course, the civilized French approach to the good life.
