    The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., in 2011 on a four-acre plot on the northeast corner of the Tidal Basin near the individual memorials to Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The 30-foot sculpture of Dr. King depicts him gazing into the horizon as he concentrates on the future and his hope for humanity.

    The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is the first memorial along the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that is dedicated to an African-American. The memorial honors Dr. King’s national and international contributions and his vision that all may someday enjoy a life of freedom, opportunity, and justice.

    The centerpiece of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is the "Stone of Hope," 30-foot granite statue of Dr. King with the inscription, "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." This quote was from his "I Have a Dream Speech" given from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

    The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial includes a 450-foot inscription wall featuring 14 quotations from Dr. King's speeches, sermons, and writings. A Council of Historians was created to select the quotations. Dr. Maya Angelou, Lerone Bennett, Dr. Clayborne Carson, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Marianne Williamson, and others collaborated during the selection process.
