Almost all Canadian public school students in grades JK through 12 enjoy a week or two off for March break each year at some point between the end of February and the beginning of April. You may also hear March break in Canada referred to as spring break or mid-winter break. Universities and colleges tend to call their spring holiday "reading week."

Differing names aside, each Canadian province has its own spring holiday schedule. March break dates differ in public school districts across Canada and change each year. Dates listed here do not include weekends, only school days, which means the holiday might last a bit longer. Make the Most of Your Break

Most families with school-age kids make special plans of some kind for the March break. Many parents take time off from work and head for sunnier climates during the March break, with the Southern U.S. states, Mexico, and the Caribbean as top-choice destinations for a warm-weather family vacation.

Other families plan special getaways closer to home, such as to nearby ski resorts in Canada or to one of Canada's incredible national parks. For parents who aren't able to take time off, families also enroll kids in local camps and special programs, which are offered in abundance during this period.

Roads, resorts, and family-friendly attractions throughout Canada often see a surge in traffic during the spring break weeks since so many kids are out of school and looking for something fun to occupy their free time. As such, you should expect larger crowds, longer wait times, heavier traffic, and higher accommodation prices at vacation destinations and tourist attractions. Spring break vacations for elementary schools, high schools, and universities in the United States fall between early March and mid-April. Depending on the March break schedule for your district, travelers to popular warm-weather destinations may miss the biggest crowds of U.S. spring breakers.
