From the moment the lights go out in the elevator ride up to the famed Times Square attraction, it’s clear that your trip to Madame Tussauds will be a bit spookier than normal. The wax museum’s annual Halloween event, After Dark, sends you on a haunted walk through the exhibit area in the dark. Life-like figures of movie stars and athletes are indistinguishable from ghostly live actors. And with barely any light to navigate your way around, there’s no telling what might be lurking around the corner.
After Dark begins with a 4D movie experience reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project. It sets the scene for the frightening adventure ahead. Whereas other haunted attractions spend their efforts on chilling special effects and elaborate costumes, After Dark caters to the fact that you’re in a nearly abandoned wax museum with no clue where to go. There is minimal use of strobe lights and mirrors, making the experience all too realistic. Although there are some chilling scares throughout the attraction, it’s too dark to make out most of the wax figures along the trek.
In the final room, however, patrons have the opportunity to take photos with the likes of Johnny Depp and George Clooney.
Including the movie, it takes about 30 minutes to make your way through the attraction. Fear seekers should stick towards the front of the pack.
Tickets prices start at $20 and only increase slightly depending on when you decide to go, making this one of New York City’s most affordable Halloween haunted attractions. You can visit the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum site for more information about Madame Tussauds After Dark and to purchase tickets.
