You'll Love the Views of Southeast Asia from these Five-Star Suites

So you've spent all that money on your transcontinental plane ticket, splurged on tour and transportation services within your destination of choice… and you ruin everything by getting a hotel room with no windows. How silly of you.

A room without a view can detract mightily from one's Southeast Asia adventure, particularly for locations with unusual beauty and scenic value. That means most of the region's top spots, if you weren't keeping score.

The starkness of the Hue Citadel flag tower looming over the Huong River in Vietnam; the dazzlingly pristine beaches of Bintan; and city lights glimmering over Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok's skylines, among others, call for accommodations that allow guests to drink these views up at leisure.

Mind you, the five-star views require five-star suites to match. With access to exclusive facilities (like a rooftop bar overlooking Bangkok's Chao Phraya River), VIPs-only beachfront (perhaps somewhere as gorgeous as Bintan), and impeccable design (all of them), the accommodations in the following list offer a collective stay experience that holds its own against the gorgeous views out the windows.

From your perch above Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, you and your loved one can watch the boats work the currents till the sun goes down and the city's lights twinkle on. The riverside view is an Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel standard offering, as all 248 guest rooms face the river running through the heart of the Thai capital.

The 62-square meter Junior Suite provides Avani's most balanced accommodation, offering space, luxury and privacy in ample and equal measure. The Junior Suite's river views are nothing short of panoramic, whether you're admiring the river activity from the bedroom or while you're soaking in the bathroom en suite's full-size tub.

Within the Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel, you can check out the expansive breakfast selection (and the equally expansive view) at Skyline, or enjoy after-dinner drinks at the Avani Riverside's rooftop bar Attitude (again, with the view).

From the Avani Riverside Bangkok, many of Bangkok's attractions lie within easy access. Just take the free boat shuttle from the adjoining Anantara Resort to the Sathorn Pier, where you can ascend to the Saphan Taksin Skytrain station to see the rest of Bangkok.

...stay in the former French Governor's official residence, built in in 1930 by the French colonial authorities and renovated in 2005 for a second life as Hue, Vietnam's finest luxury hotel.

The Resident’s Suite at La Residence Hotel and Spa occupies the entire top floor of the historic structure. The suite owes its unique circular shape to the mansion's cupola directly above it; from inside, guests enjoy 360-degree views of the surrounding city, especially the northern view of the Huong (Perfume) River and the Hue Citadel's flag tower bastion beyond it.

French doors and multi-paned windows allow a surfeit of light into the suite, greatly increasing the impression of space created by the suite's high ceiling. Beyond the suite, a capacious private verandah gives guests a private open-air space of their own overlooking the river.

The suite's four-poster bed, French drapery, and Art-Deco décor stay true to the mansion's rich heritage. Other in-room amenities cater less to local history and more to creature comforts: plasma screen television and DVD player; tea & coffee-making facilities with complimentary Vietnamese tea and premium coffee selections; a sunny bathroom with three sinks, a free-standing clawfoot tub and a glass shower stall; and well-lit nooks furnished with desks and reading lamps.

For a Saigon, Vietnam skyline view you won't soon forget...

...Try checking it out from a venue that looks almost as good as the panorama. The Reverie Saigon serves up a massive 2,981-square-foot Saigon Suite on the hotel's top two floors. From the 38th and 39th floors, the Suite's views of Saigon City overlook the Saigon River and much of the city bordering the snaking waterway.

Sure, the view looks gorgeous after dark, but the suite details are just as worthy of a prolonged look. Italian design houses Poltrona Frau and Cassina created the suite's interior décor, with the bedroom conceptualized by the latter and the parlor created by the former. The bedroom contains a Le Courbusier lounge chair that sets off the ceiling-to-floor glass windows. And in the parlor, ample leather surfaces evoke the classic era of travel.

The dining area shows off a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed dining table surrounded by six wooden barrel chairs; off to a corner stands a 357 Feltri Chair crafted from wool felt.

Many of Saigon's attractions can be seen a few minutes' walk away; Ben Thanh Market is about 14 minutes away on foot, and Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica is only slightly closer.

For the sea and sky as far as the eye can see...

From the island nation of Singapore, the picturesque tropical getaway Bintan Island can be easily reached by boat, 45 minutes away. Sitting atop the prettiest parcel of beach on the island is the Sanchaya: the view from its Presidential Vanda Villa easily rivals that of the Maldives, with the 90-square-meter balcony offering views of dazzlingly blue waters dotted with tropical sandbars in the distance.

A night at the Vanda Villa will set you back about USD 12,000 per night, but if you've got the money to spare, you get what you pay for in spades: a 240-square-meter, two-story villa done up in contemporary Asian chic. The interior comes with canopied super king size beds, massive free-standing tubs, and polished timber floors.

The artwork draws cues from nearby Singapore, beginning with the villa's namesake (Singapore's national flower) and continuing with art and furnishings that remind guests of Singapore's art and architectural heritage.
