If you're in search of a place that has plenty of character then Hard Rock Cafe on the New York side of Niagara Falls is perfect for you. The first of the two Hard Rock locations to open in the area nearly twenty years ago, this restaurant is just a five minute walk from Niagara Falls State Park where you get totally unobstructed views of the Falls.

For lunch, try the Jumbo Combo which is a favorite among diners. The dish is a complete offering of everything that the area is known for, including Buffalo wings, bruschetta, onion rings and chicken tenders.

Cost: $23-$45 per person (including entree, tax and tip)

While the Hard Rock in Ontario may share a name with its sister property across the river, the two are distinctly unique. The Ontario location opened only five months after the New York restaurant, but has a personality all its own. The restaurant has two separate dining rooms, one dedicated entirely to Elvis and the other to The Beatles, with a vast collection of their memorabilia.

If you've worked up an appetite from all the sight seeing then try one of their smokehouse sandwiches or the hickory smoked ribs. The portions are sure to keep you full for quite a while.

Cost: $23-$45 per person (including entree, tax and tip)

With over fifty beers on tap at their Niagara Falls location I'm sure you can understand why this is a favorite destination among travelers and locals alike. The setting is more upscale than other pubs in the area with framed televisions above the bar and decor like a pressed tin ceiling and a mahogany wood bar that stretches the length of the room.

For a unique take on a local dish try their Buffalo-style deviled eggs, or for something more substantial try the gnocchi poutine--a spin on the traditional Canadian dish of french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds.

    Cost: $20-$30 per person

    Niagara Falls, NY

    Duff's Famous Wings

A trip to Western New York just wouldn't be complete without stopping for chicken wings at Duff's. The restaurant is so popular that President Barack Obama made a stop a few years ago when he was in town, albeit at a different location. The atmosphere is like any other sports bar you've been to with large televisions on the walls and a simplistic seating arrangement of benches and chairs, but no one comes for the atmosphere. The wings here are like no other in town and lunch is the best time to go as they offer a great special.

Cost: $13.50 for wings and two sides

The Rainforest Cafe is a great option if you're traveling with kids and you want a place that will keep them occupied. The setting is just like you'd imagine with decor set to remind visitors that they're deep in the rainforest making it a fun location to go with family.

If you're traveling for a special anniversary or birthday, make a point to try their Sparkling Volcano ($15.99), a behemoth of a brownie sundae topped with a sparkler. It's a fun way to celebrate any occasion.

    Cost: $15-$30
