You'll have about 14 hours of daylight per day to explore Los Angeles in May.

    May's Big Holidays

Cinco de Mayo (May 5)The holiday celebrates a Mexican military victory, and many locales have festivals and activities.

In the United States, Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May. Use the California Mother's Day Guide to find some ideas Mom is sure to love.

The first big summer holiday, Memorial Day happens on the last Monday of May. Get some ideas for things to do.

Los Angeles' Best May Events: Recommendations

This is the short list of things I have done myself and recommend to my friends when they go to LA in May.

Cinespia kicks off in May. As improbable as this sounds,  at their cemetery screenings at Hollywood Forever Cemetery you'll find crowds jostling for spots to watch cult flicks and classics projected on a mausoleum wall.

Things That Look Like Fun to Do in May

I'm sharing my LA bucket list here, a selection of events and things to do that look like fun.

Amgen Tour of California: It's a multi-day bicycle race like the Tour de France, and it usually ends in the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles Open Day: If you love flowers, this is a rare chance to get a look at some of the city's finest private gardens.

Things That Are Especially Fun in the Month of May

March through August is time for something uniquely Southern California, the annual grunion run. Thousands of tiny, silver-colored fish spawn on the sand during the full moon (or the new one). See the schedule. At some Los Angeles beaches, "Grunion Greeters" are on hand to explain and help you get the most out of being there.

In LA, you can see whales nearly year round: gray whales in winter and blue whales during the summer months. Find the best places to see them and when in the guides to Los Angeles whale watching and Orange County whale watching.

More Things to Do in Los Angeles by Month

If you're trying to figure out the best month for your LA vacation, any time will be fine. You can use our monthly guides to find out more about events and what to expect all year long.

In LA, winter is DecemberJanuary and February. It's sometimes rainy, but otherwise, the sky will be clear and sunny. After the end of year holidays, attractions will be less crowded.

Spring season starts in March and extends through April and May. Signs of spring are subtle, but the weather is usually great — and except for spring break, attractions are still less crowded, up to the big holiday weekend at the end of May.

Summer busy season starts in June. So does the dreaded "June gloom" which can keep the beach areas foggy all day long. It can extend into No Sky July, too. By August it will be hot —sometimes very hot and mostly clear.

After the big September holiday, things quiet down. Weather will still be good into October and the outdoor concert season extends into the middle of the month. November is variable. Sometimes it's more like fall and sometimes more like winter.
