Los Angeles' Best April Events: Recommendations

This is the short list of things I have done myself and recommend to my friends when they go to LA in April.

Vintage Bouquet Food and Wine Extravaganza: Beverly Hills' annual food and wine event deliver top quality sipping and nibbling - in gorgeous surroundings. Outdoor stations feature more than 50 exhibitors. They include some of Los Angeles' best restaurants and specialty food, vendors. More than a dozen wineries and a generous number of non-alcoholic beverage makers are on hand, too. The associated silent auction gives you a chance to get something special for a great price. And to top it all, proceeds support the Beverly Hills Bar Association's pro bono work.

LA Brewery Art Walk: In what is considered the world's largest art complex; resident artists hold an open studio weekend. You can get a chance to speak to artists directly,...MORE purchase a fabulous new piece of art and even grab a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant.

Things That Look Like Fun to Do in April

I'm sharing my LA bucket list here, a selection of events and things to do that look like fun.

For sports fans, baseball season opens in April for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Angels. Check your favorite team's calendar for dates.

Toyota Grand PrixA weekend-long event and the longest running major "street" race in North America, with the Indy-style cars racing not on a race track, but on the city streets.

Classic Film FestivalThis festival happens in late March or early April. It features screenings of classic films in some of the city's finest old movie houses. The sponsor is Turner Classic Movies.

Fiesta Broadway, is the country's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration. Taking over most of the streets in downtown LA, this street fair has something for everyone. Live music, carnival games, plenty of authentic food, Latino artists, and vendors. This festival takes place the last Sunday in April.

March through August is time for something uniquely Southern California, the annual grunion run. Thousands of tiny, silver-colored fish spawn on the sand during the full moon (or the new one). See the schedule. At some Los Angeles beaches, "Grunion Greeters" are on hand to explain and help you get the most out of being there.

In LA, you can see whales nearly year round: gray whales in winter and blue whales during the summer months. Find the best places to see them and when in the guides to Los Angeles whale watching and Orange County whale watching.

What to Expect from Los Angeles Weather in April

Most years, winter rains end by April. In an "El Nino" year, ocean currents bring California more rain than usual. When that happens, you might get wet until the middle of the month or later. Surprisingly, April is no sunnier than January (on the average) - but the days are longer.

    • Average High Temperature: 71°F/22°C
    • Average Low Temperature: 54°F/12°C
    • Rain & Clouds Index: 1.16 inches (2.9 cm) rain, 73% sunshine

Use the weather averages to get an idea of what things may be like, but it might be different when you visit. A winter day could even be so warm you'll wish you packed your shorts. And - of course - check the forecast, too.

What Pack, What to Wear in April

In a cool year or if you're going to be near the ocean, take a jacket - or you'll regret that you didn't. Otherwise, short-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants with warmer layers on top will be okay. Shorts can be comfortable on the warmest days.

Angelenos pay more attention to fashion than people in other parts of the state, but casual attire is acceptable most everywhere. Check for dress code if you're going to a high-end restaurant and dress up a little to attend evening performances.

More Things to Do in Los Angeles by Month

If you're trying to figure out the best month for your LA vacation, any time will be fine. You can use our monthly guides to find out more about events and what to expect all year long.

In LA, winter is DecemberJanuary and February. It's sometimes rainy but otherwise the sky will be clear and sunny. After the end of year holidays, attractions will be less crowded.

Spring season starts in  March and extends through April and May. Signs of...MORE spring are subtle, but the weather is usually great — and except for spring break, attractions are still less crowded, up to the big holiday weekend at the end of May.

Summer busy season starts in June. So does the dreaded "June gloom" which can keep the beach areas foggy all day long. It can extend into July, too. By August it will be hot —sometimes very hot and mostly clear.

After the big September holiday, things quiet down. Weather will still be good into October and the outdoor concert season extends into the middle of the month. November is variable. Sometimes it's more like fall and sometimes more like winter.
