Auto Shows in Los Angeles

With LA's car culture it's not surprising that Los Angeles and Orange Counties host an astounding array of car shows for automobile fans of every ilk. Whether you're a fan of classic woodies, antique autos, race cars, luxury rides, pimped out hot rods or whatever the manufacturers have in store for next season, there's a car show in the greater LA area to get you excited. Long Beach and Huntington Beach seem to dominate with more car shows every year than any other area.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all the car shows in the area, but rather a collection of events that I think my interest auto aficionados visiting from out of town. The following LA car shows are listed by month and continue onto page 2.

    Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach

    Any time of year is a good time to check out the Saturday Sunrise Car Cruisers, AKA the Donut Derelicts who gather bright and early at Adams Avenue Donuts (9015 Adams Avenue Huntington Beach, CA 92646) every Saturday morning.     Seven times a year the Fairplex in Pomona hosts the Pomona Swap Meet and Classic Car Show where hundreds of vendors offer all kinds of hard to find parts for classic autos and people come to buy and sell as well as showcase their custom and vintage rides.

    The newest major car show in LA is the Los Angeles Classic Auto Show at the LA convention Center. The first one took place in January 2017. For 2018 it's scheduled in March.

    Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona

    The Grand National Roadster Show is the longest running competitive indoor car show in the country, taking place inside all the buildings at the LA County Fairgrounds, the Fairplex in Pomona, every January. In addition to the competition cars inside the halls, the event incorporates the Grand Daddy Drive-In, which adds 400-800 additional hot rods, classic and collector cars on display between the buildings.

    Over 500 Woodies, Nomads, VW vans and other popular surfer rides show up every March for the annual Wavecrest Huntington Beachcruiser Meet in Huntington Beach. The event spreads down Main Street onto the Huntington Beach pier.

    Race Car Simulators

    From the free Thunder Thursday opening night street party through the weekend of Grand Prix action, race cars are on display in street exhibits and at the Gran Prix Expo at the Long Beach Convention Center during the Long Beach Grand Prix each April.

    150 vintage and contemporary Ferrari's are showcased at the annual Concorso Ferrari, which takes place every April or May on Colorado Boulevard in Old Pasadena.

    Over 400 classic cars and hot rods are showcased during the Culver City Car Show the Saturday of Mother's Day Weekend in May. The event includes food, music and car-culture vendors.

    Cars from the 1940s to 1970s are exhibited on Pier Plaza at the foot of Hermosa Beach Pier, usually the first Saturday in May.

    Rodeo Drive Concours d'Elegance

    Every June on Father's Day, the famed 3-block stretch of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is closed off for the Concours D'Elegance luxury car show. The theme changes each year.

    Huntington Beach Concours D'Elegance showcases more Ferraris and Alfa Romeos than the more ubiquitous HB beach cruisers. The show takes place in Central Park each June in conjunction with the simultaneous Antique Car Show, Hot Rods in the Park, Corvettes in the Park and the Concours Motorcycle Show.

    This waterfront car show at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro takes place the Friday before the 4th of July and features live music, food and beer, and a fireworks show.

    Every July six blocks of San Fernando Boulevard and adjacent streets are closed off for the Downtown Burbank Car Classic. In addition to pre-1974 sports cars, exotics, hot rods and other classics, this event seeks out cars with a Hollywood history including those features in TV and films and vehicles owned or previously owned by celebrities. There is also live music, food vendors and family activities.

    The Cruise the Pike car show is part of the Summer Sun & Art Fest at the Pike in Downtown Long Beach in August. It includes sports cars, hot rods, custom, trucks and more.

    The Belmont Shore Car Show in Long Beach is organized by the Bay City Rodders of neighboring Seal Beach. Every September over 700 classic cars and hot rods line 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, which is closed off for the occasion.

    The Japanese Classic Car Show is an annual auto show held in September at the Queen Mary Event Park in Long Beach.

    Rods, Rides & Relics Classic Cars on the Pier is a smallish car show of about 100 classics on the pier in Redondo Beach, CA each September with a DJ spinning oldies.

    Mustangs at the Queen Mary annual showcase of Mustangs and other Fords put on by the Beach Cities Mustang Club each September moved from the Queen Mary Events Park across the harbor to The Pike Outlets in Long Beach and renamed itself Ponies at the Pike.

    The Alternative Energy & Transportation Conference and Expo takes place each September at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. This free event focuses on alternative energy vehicles and includes test drive opportunities.

    Produced by Motortrend Auto Shows, the Orange County International Auto Show features the hottest new cars and trucks, exotics and tricked-out rides at the Anaheim Convention Center in October.

    The prestigious Art Center in Pasadena, which has produced a number of luminary designers in the auto industry, presents an annual Art Center Car Classic each October. With around 150 vehicles displayed on campus, it makes up in design excellence what it may lack in volume.

    Los Angeles Auto Show

    The LA Auto Show is one of the preeminent showcases for the latest and greatest vehicles coming from worldwide auto manufacturers with a special focus on "green" technologies. The public event takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in November/December. Cars are not for sale, but you can buy related merchandise. In addition to a showcase of cars, there are family-friendly celebrity events, primarily with race car drivers and sports figures.
