The Leatherstocking Golf Course at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown, New York, is a member of the New York Golf Trail and another of those "old-world" layouts designed early in the last century by Devereux Emmet. Emmet was an incredible golf course architect and is regarded as one of the masters of the "golden age." He was a prolific golf course architect with some 130 designs to his name. Unfortunately, many of them are now gone, the victims of real estate development. The Leatherstocking Golf Course at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown is, however, considered to be one of the best of the survivors and "one of the East's most scenic and challenging resort golf courses." If you've never played this amazing golf course, it's one for your bucket list. Add it now!
The layout is set on the western shores of Lake Otsego, and like most of Emmet's designs, it makes the best use of the terrain's natural contours. It's a scenic golf course - very much an understatement - with tight, elevated fairways and tees that provide stunning views of the lake and its surroundings. The greens are small, complex, fast running, tough to read, and well guarded by bunkers strategically placed to provide more than one way onto the putting surface. And, talking of elevated tee boxes, the 18th hole at Leatherstocking, a 505-yard, par 5, is unique for its island tee box: from tee to landing area it's a forced carry of more than 120 yards across Lake Otsego. From there, the hole is a dog legs left around the lake to the green in front of The Otesaga Resort's veranda. What a great way to finish a round. There's no other like it that I know of.
As with almost all of the early 20th century layouts, the 18-hole Leatherstocking Golf Course is somewhat short. From the back tees it plays 6,416 yards for a par of 72. The course rating is 70.8 and the slope is 135. Designed by Devereux Emmet, the Leatherstocking Golf Course is a member of the New York Golf Trail and first opened for play in 1909.
Green Fees: 18 holes - the daily rate is $93. For guests of the Otesaga ($103 public access), including cart.Twilight rate (after 3pm) is $60, cart $21 per person; if you decide to walk, a pull cart is $5. Tee times may be made in advance - call the number listed below.
