    The Right Gear

Redfeather Snowshoes - Right Gear for Snowshoeing in Vermont at Mount Snow
Learn How to Snowshoe at Mount Snow in Vermont My Vermont snowshoeing adventure began at Mount Snow's Grand Summit Hotel, where I was outfitted with lightweight Redfeather snowshoes. I'd read in advance to wear hiking boots, and I found it easy to tighten the snowshoe straps around my Timberlands. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius

Guided Tours at Mount Snow Make it Easy to Give Snowshoeing a Go

Want to know how to work up a sweat when it's 20 degrees outdoors in Vermont? Go snowshoeing.

I had the chance to try snowshoeing for the first time during my February 2010 visit to Mount Snow in West Dover, Vermont. During my guided tour, I quickly learned that this winter sport is easier--and more strenuous--than I'd imagined. The snowshoes' sturdy cleats ensured I never felt off-balance, even though I was toting my SLR and camera case. But by the time our trek in the woods was over, I couldn't wait to peel off layers and drink about a gallon of water. Snowshoeing is a workout! According to Self's calorie calculator, snowshoeing burns more than twice as many calories as moderate walking.

The spa at Mount Snow's Grand Summit offers group and private snowshoe treks for both hotel guests and day visitors to the ski area: There's even a snowshoe and massage package. Call 802-464-6606 for prices and...MORE reservations. Or, snowshoe on your own by purchasing a trail pass at Mount Snow Sports.

Learn How to Snowshoe at Mount Snow in Vermont Snowshoeing is a perfect winter sport alternative for those like me who do not ski. I'll admit, however, that when I saw we were going to snowshoe up the Mount Snow slope these downhillers were descending, I thought they'd made the better choice!. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius

    Have Faith

Snowshoe Tour in Vermont at Mount Snow - Snowshoeing Trail Photo
Learn How to Snowshoe at Mount Snow in Vermont Our snowshoe tour guide, Chris Kennedy, must have read my mind because as we set out uphill, she pronounced: "Have faith in the shoe." She was right. I felt secure throughout our ascent. I was definitely winded, though, when we reached this wooded trail. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius

    Lagging Behind

Photo of Snowshoers - Snowshoeing in Vermont
Learn How to Snowshoe at Mount Snow in Vermont I lagged behind tour guide Chris Kennedy and fellow writer Aaron Frost for most of our snowshoe outing. My official explanation: I was pursuing good photo angles! Snowshoeing is as easy as walking, but Vermont's hilly terrain adds a challenge. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius

    Poles Are Optional

Learn How to Snowshoe at Mount Snow in Vermont Our guide, Chris Kennedy, suggested that snowshoe poles might help us with balance, but I passed, since I was already toting my camera and camera bag. STONE Magazine's Aaron Frost used poles more for an added workout than for balance, he said. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius

Snowshoeing is one heck of a workout. I peeled off layers and drank about a gallon of water back at the Main Base Lodge. © 2010 Kim Knox Beckius
