Laurier Gordon Ramsay: Montreal Restaurant a Canadian First

It's official. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's first Canadian venture takes root in Montreal as of August 10, 2011, in a local BBQ chicken institution some say was way past its prime in its final years -- to quote one of my readers, Jonboy: "the absolute WORST place for chicken I’ve ever eaten in ... and even worse was the sauce, a putrid concoction of vile tasting brown liquid that I nearly gagged on ..." Well, tunes are changing with a new chef in town.

February 16, 2012 UPDATE: As of February 17, 2012, Gordon Ramsay is no longer involved with the restaurant. Effective immediately, it's renamed Laurier 1936, with the restaurant owner claiming Ramsay was barely implicated in the first place, alleging that Ramsay has not set foot in the eatery since its August opening.

March 21, 2012 UPDATE: Gordon Ramsay filed a $2.7 million lawsuit against the owner of Laurier BBQ, to cover "$2.25-million in lost license fees through 2016 along with $500,000 in damages for defamation." Ramsay claims that he was to be paid a little over $48,000 a month for lending his name, likeness and recipes to the Montreal landmark, which prior to Ramsay's involvement, was getting less than complimentary reviews. Details here.

April 16, 2013 UPDATE: Laurier 1936, formerly known as Laurier Gordon Ramsay and before that, Laurier BBQ, officially closes as of April 16, 2013.

Laurier Gordon Ramsay: Menu Items
BBQ chicken, wings, ribs, the menu is fairly similar to Laurier BBQ's original lineup, notwithstanding ingredient tune-ups and a few new dishes, including shrimp and crab rolls and grilled salmon.

Laurier Gordon Ramsay: Price Range*
Prices are up there considering it's BBQ chicken comfort food fare.

Mind you, it's BBQ chicken comfort food fare signed Gordon Ramsay. And from glancing at the menu, management isn't skimping on quality ingredients. Not including taxes and tip, sides of coleslaw are $3, a 1/4 BBQ chicken breast with coleslaw, fries and gravy is $14, a large tuna salad is $16 and a regular poutine is $10, the latter easily $3 to $4 above the average price in Montreal.
