If you've ever looked for some late-night food in Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, or Alameda, you know how difficult it can be to find anything open after 9 pm.
While there aren't many restaurants that stay open late, here is a list of those that are open until at least 11 pm, to satisfy your semi-late night cravings.
Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe, established in 2002, has two locations. The original is located in Emeryville, while the more recent addition is in Uptown Oakland location near the Fox Theater and Paramount Theatre (and very close to the 19th Street BART station).
The food is typical late-night diner fare with a slightly upscale twist. Classics like cheeseburgers and pulled pork sandwiches are served alongside petite baby spinach salads and sweet potato fries.
As most University of California at Berkeley students know, Au Coquelet is a great spot to hang out or study until the wee hours.
The abundant supply of fresh-baked pastries and tortes serve as tasty dessert after your meal, or alone as a late night snack. Most of the food tends toward mediocrity rather than excellence, but that isn't always the biggest concern when you're hungry late at night.
One of the beloved icons of Oakland's fast-improving food scene, Mua stays open later on most nights, but closes at 10:00 p.m. on Sundays. Be sure to check their website before visiting.
In addition to the selection of drinks at the bar, you can enjoy delicious gourmet comfort food. Stick with tried-and-true selections like a burger, grilled salmon, or more exotic choices like Moroccan tagine.
If you're feeling really adventurous, choose one of the quirky options such as a pressed watermelon salad or a burger made of chickpeas, quinoa, and bulgur. If you are with a fairly large party, Mua this is a great option, as there is ample seating.
Shooting Star Cafe
Address1022 Webster St, Oakland, CA 94607, USA
Located in Oakland's Chinatown area, Shooting Star Cafe serves up mostly Asian fusion cuisine until 2:00 a.m. every day of the week. The menu is incredibly extensive and includes not only food but also fun alcoholic beverages like "horoscope drinks.”
Shootin Star also happens to be one of the relatively few Oakland restaurants that serve crepes, a French inspired late night tradition. Shoot Star is a solid choice for late-night dining if you're in the area and want to go beyond a basic burger and fries.
Known by locals as Nation's, this chain of diners is found exclusively in the Bay Area, and always open late.
Besides burgers, there are options for vegetarians and plenty of desserts for those with a sweet tooth.
There are several locations in the area, including:
- Jack London Square, 317 Broadway, Oakland
- 1800 University Ave., Berkeley
- 1432 Webster St., Alameda
Luka's Taproom and Lounge, named after the owner's dog, is located in Uptown Oakland near the Fox and Paramount (and quite close to the second location of Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe). It caters largely to the people exiting the shows at these venues, or those waiting for the shows to start and serves an interesting menu of French-inspired Californian comfort food.
